Job Description
Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking an experience Packaging Engineer to provide support for design, testing and certification of Type B and AF radioactive material packages. The staff member will provide support for the development and review of Safety Analysis Reports for Packages (SARPs) for our DOE-EM and NNSA customers.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical support services for Type B and Fissile Radioactive Materials Packaging in the areas of mechanical design, structures, thermodynamics, container, shielding, subcriticality, gas generation, operation, acceptance, maintenance, and/or quality assurance.
- Support Packaging development and certification activities.
- Working level knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and regulatory guides; Department of Transportation regulations; DOE Regulations, standards, and orders; American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sections and consensus national standards pertaining to packaging and transportation.
- Working understanding of DOE and NRC regulations in 10 CFR 71 for Type B and Type AF packaging.
- Demonstrated experience in authority Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARP) and replying to requests for additional information (RAI) from Type B packaging Certification Officials.
- Working understanding of DOE packaging Orders and the Packaging Review Guide (PRG).
- Working understanding of NRC Regulatory Guides
- Working understanding of the DOE orders governing onsite packaging and transportations (Hazmat transport that is out of Commerce but within access-controlled boundaries of site).
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS + 7-9 yrs; MS + 6-8 yrs; PhD + 5-7 yrs of relevant experience
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is LegallyRequired
- A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an NRC or DOE regulated environment.
- Experience and knowledge in the acceptance and review process of DOE Type B packages
