Job Description
SRNL’s Materials Science and Disposition group is seeking a qualified Corrosion Scientist/Engineer to grow the laboratory’s portfolio in the areas of materials sciences, materials development for the immobilization of nuclear wastes, and the upcycling of non-nuclear waste types. Successful candidates would have a Ph.D. in a chemical and/or materials related field, demonstrated ability to design and carry out research to leverage new technologies, materials corrosion and performance evaluation, and phenomena, and demonstrated ability to apply and interpret scientific or engineering laws and theories to solve general problems. The role will involve consistent focus in application of research for technologies or products and development of new solutions. Field of Study/Capabilities include but not limited to chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science/engineering, physics and related science or engineering disciplines.
Role
In the role, the candidate will work on interdisciplinary teams to propose and define the scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenging problems, including development of proposals and funding opportunities for first-of-kind concepts for materials system solutions for:
- materials corrosion assessment in highly radioactive waste environments, and
- materials performance evaluation for variety of assets such as pipeline and large storage tanks, etc.
Responsibilities
- Conducts and gathers research to further knowledge in a particular area
- Diagnoses issues using a systematic and methods approach.
- Thorough understanding of their discipline and a rudimentary understanding of other disciplines.
- Presents results of research to appropriate scientific and business audiences and may participate in commercialization of results. Communicates using persuasion and authority.
- Maintains mutually beneficial partnerships with other functions.
- Understands how their team contributes to the department and meet the goals defined.
- Does not manage employees, but may mentor and/or train subordinates.
- Arrives at conclusion based on previous experiences and good judgment.
- Works safely with particular attention to quality. Complies with all policies and standards. Maintain appropriate level government security clearance. For which US Citizenship is required, legally.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS + 7-9 yrs; MS + 6-8 yrs; PhD + 5-7 yrs
- Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate level government security clearance which requires a US citizenship status
Preferred Qualifications
- BS + 20-30 yrs; MS + 10-20 yrs; PhD + 8-15 yrs.
- Individual should be well established and be known through referred journal and conference proceeding publications.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to internal and external organizations.
- Candidates with proposal writing experience will be given preference.

As the lead laboratory for Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Legacy Management (DOE-LM), SRNL applies our talent and expertise to develop and deploy innovative approaches and technologies to reduce risk, cost, and schedule of environmental cleanup and nuclear material processing.
