Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the Environmental Management mission at the lab. Qualified individuals must hold a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
Role
Postdoctoral Research positions support the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management mission to reduce risk associated with radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel (SNF), excess plutonium and uranium, and/or contaminated soil and groundwater. The candidate will apply technical knowledge in the fields of metallurgical engineering and materials science to a variety of R&D programs at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). The candidate should have a strong knowledge of metal and ceramic materials processing with aptitude to support advanced material development. In the role, the candidate will work on interdisciplinary teams to propose and define the scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenging problems, including development of first-of-kind concepts for materials system solutions for:
- Nuclear materials processing/treatment for stabilization for extended storage/disposition
- Advanced materials for applications in mechanical/chemical systems
The Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are fixed term assignments within the company and benefits eligible .
Responsibilities
The selected candidate will routinely employ their expertise in product and process development, metallography, failure analysis and problem solving to execute project deliverables, while meeting all safety and operational expectations with little supervisory guidance. The candidate will lead and complete experimental efforts to test hypothesis, document the research, and contribute to data interpretation and making conclusions. The candidate will be expected to author reports, document data and methods, and effectively communicate results and conclusions to colleagues and customers.
Field of Study/Capabilities include but not limited to chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science/engineering, physics and related science or engineering disciplines.
Positions are focused on leading, advancing, developing, and applying science, technology, engineering, information technology, and research and development to anticipate innovate and deliver solutions to Laboratory programs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD + 0-3 yrs
- Individuals must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the start of employment.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is LegallyRequired

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

SRNL’s Environmental & Legacy Management (ELM) Directorate closely collaborates with the Department of Energy (DOE) and site contractors to develop, mature, and apply science and technology needed to resolve environmental challenges and advance legacy management missions. As the lead laboratory for Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Legacy Management (DOE-LM), SRNL applies our talent and expertise to develop and deploy innovative approaches and technologies to reduce risk, cost, and schedule of environmental cleanup and nuclear material processing. Additionally, ELM is using our competencies to develop new materials and processes for a range of clean energy applications.
