What You'll Do
The Chief Nuclear Explosive Safety (NES) Engineer serves as the subject matter expert (SME) of the NES Engineering discipline in the Engineering Safety Programs organization at Pantex. The Chief NES Engineer provides technical guidance and direction to NES Technical Staff and Managers; ensuring compliance with Nuclear Explosive Safety regulations; overseeing technical procedures and guides, and compliance with relevant regulations. Advises and leads as SME within the group, remains involved with the NES community, and keeps abreast of developments in standards and regulations. Participates in NNSA NES Order and Supplemental Directive reviews and updates. Supports NES evaluation activities either as a Nuclear Explosive Safety Study Group (NESSG) member or as an advisor to the project team.
You must effectively use your technical background, judgment, creativity, and innovation to work with internal and external organizations to develop unique technical solutions for issues that affect weapon operations. Your duties also include developing, leading, and implementing improvements to departmental technical processes and procedures.
The Chief NES Engineer will effectively coordinate complex, multi-discipline engineering safety issues with senior management, customers, production operations, engineering groups, project teams, company technical specialists, or other groups. The Chief NES Engineer will also prepare (or direct the preparation of) project studies and reports, participate in the training and qualification of NES Representatives and NESSG members, and assure the flowdown of NES requirements into plant documents. Proficient oral and written communication skills with the ability to conduct presentations to senior level executives, governmental customers, engineering groups, or other groups is a requirement. Candidate must have excellent time management, mentoring, listening, and critical thinking skills.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 12 years of relevant experience
- Master's degree and 10 years of relevant experience
- OR Applicants without a bachelor's degree may be considered based on a combination of at least 20 years of completed education and/or relevant experience.
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2, Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year of nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative. DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (BS) with 20-years (minimum) experience in Nuclear Safety with at least 6 of those years working in the nuclear explosive safety subject area. Included in this the BS applicant shall have 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.
- Master’s degree in engineering (MS) with 18-years (minimum) experience in mechanical design with at least 6 of those years working in the nuclear industry. Included in this the MS applicant shall have 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills required. The selected candidate must be comfortable working in a high visibility environment and must have demonstrated skill presenting technical information clearly and effectively through oral and written communications. Candidate should demonstrate the ability to perform duties with initiative, independent judgment and discretion. The candidate must have a proven track record of successful customer and executive leadership interaction.
- In addition to satisfying one of the above education and experience criteria, the candidate should have experience as a qualified Nuclear Explosive Safety Study Group (NESSG) member who has received training required to achieve and maintain the proficiencies needed to meet the requirements of National Nuclear Security Administration Supplemental Directive (NNSA SD) 452.2B and/or Department of Energy Standard (DOE-STD)-1185.
- Selected candidate should demonstrate additional knowledge of explosive safety documentation and application of related Explosive Safety requirements as defined in DOE-STD-1212. Participation in Explosive Safety Committee activities is desired.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
