Overview:
We are seeking a Geospatial Software Engineer who will focus on (high level description of what the individual will be doing). This position resides in the Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics Group in the Earth System Informatics and Data Discovery Section, Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Full stack software development utilizing React and Flask frameworks to enable the discovery, analysis, visualization, and downloading of geospatial data.
- Configure, administer, and maintain geospatial data servers such as GeoServer and ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Manage application deployment workflows utilizing Docker.
- Design database tables and integrate new datasets into existing database models.
- Use Python to process large environmental datasets for use in geospatial web applications.
- Collaborate with research scientists and stakeholders to integrate existing statistical models into application code and develop new features as defined by project objectives.

Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. in geographic information science, computer science, hydrology, ecology or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience (B.S.) or one year of relevant experience (M.S.).
- A minimum of two years of practical experience as a full-stack software developer working with Earth science-related applications, including experience working with at least one front end geospatial package such as OpenLayers, Leaflet, Mapbox GL JS, etc. Experience working with hydrology or ecology-related applications and data is particularly preferred.
- Practical experience in two or more of the following languages: TypeScript, Javascript, Python, or SQL.
- Practical experience working with geospatial databases, such as PostgreSQL + PostGIS.
- Practical experience working with geospatial data servers such as ArcGIS Enterprise or GeoServer. GeoServer experience is particularly preferred.
- Practical experience working within a version control system during the software development lifecycle, such as GitHub or GitLab.
- Demonstrated experience working in a team software development environment, contributing to shared goals.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing documentation, developing and analyzing use cases, and presenting results to colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new material and technology rapidly and put that learning into effective practice.
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and debug application code independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience implementing a REST Application Program Interface, particularly using Flask or Python-based frameworks.
- Experience working with hydrology or ecology-related applications and data.
- Experience developing user interfaces with React, particularly for web mapping applications.
- Experience consuming or delivering data through geospatial web services, such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service (WMS) or Web Feature Service (WFS) protocols
- Experience pertaining to DevOps and software deployment methodologies.
- Practical experience with processing large datasets, particularly in technical formats such as NetCDF or HDF5.
- Experience administering and publishing or consuming services from spatial data servers, particularly as it pertains to GeoServer or ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Communication and writing skills, particularly as applied to software documentation, software demonstrations, or contributions to scientific publications.
- Database design and data normalization workflows.
- Experience with developing AI/ML workflows and integrating them into software projects.
- Developing or contributing to large, complex software systems.
- Scientific data visualization and/or scientific data analysis.
- Linux command line experience.
- Formal degrees or training programs working with geospatial data and geospatial information systems.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
