What You'll Do
The primary duty is the management of the activities and personnel of the Nuclear Explosive Safety Section within the Nuclear & Explosive Surety Department, including supervision of engineers, scientists, and other technical personnel. Participates in management, organization, and review of Nuclear Explosive Safety (NES) Program deliverables assigned to the section. Frequent contact with internal and external customers relevant to NES evaluations and nuclear explosive operations, equipment, facilities and systems. Participates in the training and certification of NES Representatives and Nuclear Explosive Safety Study Group (NESSG) Members. Establishes and prioritizes the activities of the Nuclear Explosive Safety Section concerning operational and scheduling commitments, requirements, and decisions.
The employee customarily and regularly directs the work of two or more employees (meaning ten full-time employees or their equivalent (equivalent means, for example, one full-time employee and two half-time employees is the equivalent of two full-time employees). The employee must have the authority to hire or fire direct-report employees or participate in that process by making suggestions and recommendations thereto, which are given particular weight, meaning they must be made with reasonable degree of frequency, and then relied upon in the decision-making process.
NOTE: This position requires Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification. If the successful candidate is not currently certified in the HRP, the certification process will be initiated upon assumption of the position. If the successful candidate is currently certified in the HRP, a review for HRP certification in the appropriate category will be performed by the hiring manager and the HRP Management Official, and the certification process in the appropriate category will be initiated upon assumption of the position.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a technical discipline with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
DOE Order 426.2A Requirements
- In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of Department of Energy (DOE) O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science and 4 years nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- 3 years of supervisory/management experience
- 5 years of specialized experience working in explosives/nuclear explosives areas or in an explosives/nuclear explosive safety function with design, assembly/disassembly, maintenance, testing, handling or storage
- Knowledge of Pantex site operations (i.e., nuclear explosive), engineering processes, and configuration management, as well as a thorough understanding of nuclear explosives safety
- Ability to apply extensive technical expertise and contribute to technical solutions to complex problems
- Ability to manage and direct work activities of engineers, scientists, and other technical personnel
- Demonstrated ability to interface with internal and external customers on advanced technical matters of significance
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through the oral and written word
- Knowledge of DOE O 452.1, DOE O 452.2, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Supplemental Directive (SD) 452.2, and DOE-Standards (STD)-1212 requirements
- Experience with NES evaluations, as a project team member, presenter, NESSG member, and/or NES Chair
NOTE: A developmental plan, approved by the Division Director or delegate, will be required for anyone hired into a management role without evidence of the preferred supervisory/management experience minimums.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10 CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
