Essential Job Duties
- Performs initial acceptance and periodic inspections of essential materials used in the internal and external dose monitoring and radiation measurements laboratory.
- Assembles, assigns, and exchanges dosimeters in support of the external dosimetry program.
- Performs basic preventive maintenance on dosimeter readers, liquid scintillation counters, low-background proportional counters, pipettes, radiation exposure system and other essential equipment as assigned.
- Assesses equipment stability using statistical methods.
- Maintains a comprehensive record of radiological samples analyses and dose assignments as specified by procedures.
- Supports area monitoring, ambient, and environmental radiation monitoring programs at various locations on and off the plant.
- Implements the tritium bioassay program by collecting, preparing, and analyzing bioassay and other similar samples.
- Prepares and analyzes contamination control, workplace monitoring, and specialized samples as assigned.
- Administers and coordinates the plutonium, uranium, and thorium bioassay programs by sample collection, sample tracking, and shipment preparation of these samples to subcontracted laboratories.
- Complies with waste disposal requirements imposed on materials used within the operation.
- Supports the emergency response program at the Pantex Plant.
- Operates low-background proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters, dosimeter readers, pipettes, alpha spectrometers, and other instrumentation as assigned.
- Distributes, collects, tests, and gathers data from radiological monitoring devices and documents results according to established procedures.
- Performs operational checks and calibration of various equipment as assigned by management or management-specified, trained personnel.
- Assists operational health physics programs as directed.
- Assists in maintenance, writing, filing, and generation of records within the Radiation Safety Department.
- Performs work following relevant Plant Standards, Internal Operating Procedures, Manuals, and written or oral instructions.
- Responsible for application of established personnel and operating policies and programs, including Union Agreements, employee concerns, discipline processes, and safety, health and security standards.
- Responsible for protecting private, privileged, or sensitive materials related to workers’ doses.
- Accountable for all direct output assigned and for providing direct output support to their manager.
- Responsible for maintaining a thorough knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Department of Energy (DOE), Corporate and Plant rules, regulations and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
- Assists with preparation and maintenance of operating procedures, systems, policies, manuals, and controls pertaining to the assigned area of responsibility.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Job Duties Continued - Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes, and as appropriate, become certified and/or knowledgeable in the safe handling of hazardous waste, chemicals, substances and materials as determined by Training Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 426.2) and Management.
- Completes training in at least one Radiation Health Tech (RHT)-specific duty area and will follow the directions of the senior RHT in that duty area. An RHT I may be responsible for one or more of the following duty areas:
- External Dosimetry: Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) reader processes, TLD processes, dosimetry processes, and operation of the radiation exposure system.
- Internal Dosimetry: bioassay monitoring program requirements, tritium bioassay process, and heavy metal bioassay process.
- Laboratory Specialized: Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) calibrations, Gas Flow Proportional Counter (GFPC) system calibrations, alpha spectrometry calibrations, and routine lab support functions.
- Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
- Understands a worker’s right to stop work when they feel their own or others personal safety is jeopardized.
- Attends all required safety meetings and training. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.
- Works under the direction of and instructions from management-specified and trained RHTs, Technical Leads, and section and department management.
- Provides suggestions on process improvement for their areas of responsibility.
- Works with other members of the team of employees in which they are assigned in a responsible and mature manner. Shows respect to co-workers; exhibits responsibility at performing assigned tasks cooperatively and with the attitude of providing performance at expected levels of quality and completeness; strives to understand and support the requirements of the team as their primary goal.
Skills And Minimum Qualifications
- Must meet initial employment requirements.
- Must be able to read, write, and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions.
- Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
- Required to maintain neat, accurate and complete records and files.
- Must have successfully passed comprehensive biennial examinations required by the Pantex Radiological Control Manual.
- Must be able to work under general supervision.
- Must be able to perform basic radiological calculations and convert data to appropriate units.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions as required.
Education
- Must have at least twelve (12) college credit hours in a Health Physics related field (e.g. Radiation Protection Technology, Nuclear Technology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, scientific field, laboratory, etc.) and six (6) credit hours of college level mathematics and/or computer applications.
- OR
- Must have four (4) years relevant documented experience.

DOE Order 426.2A Requirements
- In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., 1 year job-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
