Essential Job Duties
Performs work primarily in a specialized field of metrology. Depending upon job assignment and primary skill, the technician performs precise calibration, modification, and troubleshooting to ensure the accuracy of complex mechanical, physical, electronic, and health physics measuring instruments. These instruments are used to inspect and test weapons, weapons systems, and non-weapons systems within metrology parameters which include all basic measurement quantities such as length, mass, time, current, temperature, force, radiological exposure, decay rates and all derived quantities thereof. The technician works with precision artifacts and standards in the performance of these functions.
Typical Functions Of This Classification Are As Follows
- Maintains, tests, and cross-checks Pantex Metrology Laboratory primary reference standards for the basic quantities in the mechanical, physical, electronic and health physics measurement parameters.
- Participates in the performance of measurement audit packages and blind audits as prescribed by, and in close association with, the Associates Laboratories (AL) Primary Standards Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and other AL Contractor Standards Laboratories in determining the competence of the Pantex Metrology Laboratory technical staff.
- Maintains, tests, calibrates, and certifies Pantex Metrology Laboratory working standards for use in the calibration and certification of test equipment.
- Maintains, tests, and certifies measuring and test equipment for use in weapons-related and general operations activities at the Plant.
- Initiates technical reports utilizing existing procedures, schematics, documents, and specifications to provide technical data to engineering staff for measurement system studies as requested.
- Performs mathematical calculations and technical evaluations.
- Assists in establishing new metrology procedures and techniques with a high degree of accuracy.
- Applies statistical quality control concepts and techniques by preparing statistical charts.
- Supports automated calibrations and test systems and measurement assurance programs.
- Performs tasks according to Standards, Internal Operating Procedures, Operation and Instruction Standards, and other written procedures or verbal instructions.
- Follows prescribed safety and security procedures.
- Maintains equipment and records as directed by good laboratory practices.
- Interprets drawings and procedures.
- Required to stay abreast of metrology aspects by learning new instructions, procedures, and equipment operations.
- Performs training functions once certified in the Pantex Metrology Department Certification Program.
- Ensures that protective clothing and equipment are used and that safety procedures are followed as applicable.
- Performs work with a high degree of accuracy in all phases of duties under general supervision.
- Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Department of Energy (DOE), Corporate and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 426.2), and Management.
- Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
- Understands a worker’s right to stop work when they feel their own or other’s personal safety is jeopardized.
- Attends all required safety meetings and trainng. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.

- Must have education and experience as noted in the specific requirements depending upon the job vacancy.
- Must demonstrate technical writing skills by possessing an ability to initiate and maintain neat, accurate, and complete procedures and documents.
- All qualifications, work history, training, and education are to be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof. Ability to perform the functions and responsibilities involved will be determined by a comprehensive interview and background evaluation.
Education
Mechanical/Dimensional Metrology
- Must have attained the National Certification in Machining; or Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL)/Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE) (Level 5 - Journeyman, or higher level); or have an Associate Degree in Metrology, Airframe Mechanical Technician Degree, Industrial Manufacturing, Machining Technology or a related Engineering or Engineering Technology field.
- Must have a minimum of 2 years recent metrology experience as currently being performed in the applicable Pantex Metrology Standards Laboratory.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of precision measurement and precision measurement equipment as determined by a structured interview.
DOE Order 426.2 Requirements
- In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., 1 year job-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
