Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas.
Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.
Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Responsibilities
As a Structural Engineer, the candidate will be responsible for full time structural design engineering support for minor facility modifications in Cat 2, 3/non-nuclear, balance of Plant facilities, and Backbone Infrastructure Utility areas. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Candidate must be proficient with developing structural designs including drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, cold-formed steel, timber), engineering instructions, data sheets, equipment specifications, equivalency evaluations, structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting or oversight of drafting, and preparation of construction specifications in the form of general notes on the drawings.
- Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and will routinely provide design verifications and squad checks, input to system engineers and other plant customers. Design engineer will routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel. This position will require technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
- Candidate must have familiarity with and experience in developing designs in accordance with ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1), and a variety of CSA related issues relative to non-reactor nuclear facilities, natural phenomena events, structural rehabilitation, and building evaluations. Must also be familiar with consensus design codes. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to building evaluations and modifications, seismic analyses and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, and machine installations.
- Experience in an NRC or DOE regulated environment is desirable. Requires an understanding of Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance for facilities operating within a nuclear regulated environment.
- CAD drafting experience not required but preferred, along with any 3D modelling experience. Structural modelling experience with STAAD Pro and GT STRUDL also preferred.
Qualifications
- BS Degree in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline from ABET accredited university.
- 10 - 14 years of direct experience.
- Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
- Must be willing to work in a production environment.
- The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance is required.
- Pre-employment Drug Screen - External applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
- Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
