Overview:
We are seeking an entry level mechanical designer to provide part time support that implements advancements in manufacturing science and automation technology associated with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Department of Energy (DOE) mission. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. This position resides in the Radioisotope Infrastructure Development group in the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate at ORNL.
In this position, you will be a part of teams working toward achieving both the overall mission of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and those goals specific to the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division. You will be a part of the team implementing advances in flexible industrial automation which increase process throughput through design of custom machinery.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work with engineers to develop complex electro-mechanical equipment system designs to be deployed in facility gloveboxes and hot cells.
- Apply automation and optimization principles to current processes and in-process inspections.
- Apply fundamental engineering principles to analyze and optimize designs.
- Collaborate with team members by providing rapid prototyping support.
- Help to support team goals and work with other team members.

Basic Qualifications:
- 0-2 years of experience working in a fast-paced research and development environment.
- Minimum of one year of experience using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks or Fusion360).
- Demonstrated ability to work both individually and as part of a diverse team.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a BS degree program in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Design experience with custom equipment deployed within glovebox environment.
- Experience with process automation, in-process inspection, robotics, photogrammetry, and/or machine learning.
- Proven experience delivering technical presentations to audiences, including senior technical staff, stakeholders, and industry professionals.
- Demonstrated practical engineering skills through internships, co-op programs, or volunteer roles in organizations such as FIRST Robotics Competition.
This is a causal status, limited term position for 18 months with potential for extension.
