Job Description
The Advanced Engineering Division of Savannah River National Laboratory Weapons Production Technology Directorate (WPT) is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Manager for the Mechanical Systems Group as part of the Mechanical Systems & Custom Development organization. This management position provides oversight of personnel who perform research, engineering development & design, technical evaluations, testing and deployment of specialized equipment for nuclear facilities. Candidate will demonstrate technical and business acumen including experience with safe and secure mission execution, proposal development, work planning, managing and leading employees to deliver high performance results, fostering and maintaining a collaborative work environment, assisting senior leadership in the development of strategic growth plans, external customer engagement, and a general understanding of DOE nuclear process challenges and technical operations.
Responsibilities
Achieves goals by organizing, planning, coordinating, directing, guiding, and managing the work of others. Management responsibilities include personnel management, time & attendance approvals, performance appraisals, compensation recommendations, deploying resources effectively, budget, training and development. Position focus is on managing others and applying management skills to achieve strategic objectives. Results are primarily achieved through the work of others and typically depend on the manager's ability to influence and negotiate with others where formal authority is not held.

- Supports group members by consistently reviewing technical products such as proposals, publications, drawings, design output and reports to achieve high quality results.

- Coaches staff regarding Battelle Practices – The Safe Conduct of Research.
- Holds regular group meetings promoting good communication.
- Markets group capabilities to SRS and DOE sponsors.

- Ensures quality of products & services are delivered by assigning appropriately trained, qualified and motivated staff.
- Displays effective interpersonal and communication skills, which include the ability to engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff, the ability to discuss program strategies with current and potential funding agencies, an ability to delegate tasks to staff and administrators, and ability to interact with all levels of laboratory management.
- Assesses circumstances using experience and a variety of information gathered to help the group deliver value and improve operations.
- Works safely with particular attention to quality.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. in Engineering, with 7 yrs. relevant experience
- Experience leading R&D teams
- Successful performance as an engineer or managing projects including sponsor relationship management.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in relevant field.
- Demonstrated ability to lead staff developing specialized equipment.
- Successful customer/sponsor relationship management.
- Strong interpersonal communications both oral and written, along with problem solving skills.
- Experience working with other DOE National Laboratories.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced development environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
