Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
The EIC Division for Detector Systems is supporting the design of the different components of the EIC general purpose detector, ePIC, including the readout electronics and data-acquisition as well as the design and integration of the different experimental equipment along the interaction region, the hadron and electron polarimetry and the luminosity monitor. The division is the home of the engineering team for ePIC.
Position Description
The EIC Division for Detector Systems has an opening for a Mechanical Technician to support the mechanical team and the ePIC collaboration with prototyping of subdetectors. After the ending of RHIC operations, the experimental hall hosting the detector will need to be prepared for installation for all the subsystems. The assembly of the ePIC detector together with the engineering team will be the main focus of the position.
