What You'll Do
Serve as a member of a specialized commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver team to safely and securely transport non-nuclear materials between National Nuclear Secruity Administration (NNSA) laboratories, plants, and sites. Incumbents apply advanced knowledge of regulatory requirements and United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE), NNSA policies, independently strategizing and executing transportation plans while making critical autonomous decisions in complex and evolving scenarios to ensure secure and compliant operations, directly impacting national security and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Autonomy: May be required to operate with limited supervision or oversight, making independent, time-urgent, and critical decisions to prevent negative consequences related to the transportation of materials. The employee's primary duty involves office or non-manual work directly related to managing the company's general business operations. This duty necessitates the exercise of discretion and independent judgment, such as the authority to formulate, affect, interpret, or implement management policies or operating practices. This also includes carrying out major assignments that significantly impact the company's business operations. Independent judgment and discretion involve evaluating possible courses of action and making independent choices, free from immediate direction, especially concerning matters of safety or national security significance.
- Compliance: Maintain a thorough understanding and adhere to all NNSA, Department of Transportation (DOT), and other relevant regulatory requirements for CMV operation and hazardous materials transport (if applicable to non nuclear components [NNC]). Additional duties include planning/performing assessments, performing hazmat package and cargo securement inspections, research, development and continuous improvements in policies, procedures and training methods to ensure safe and secure NNC transport. May participate in the development and implementation of transportation strategies supporting federally-tasked mission requirements. May exercise independent judgment in interpreting federal transportation regulations and determining compliant operational approaches under dynamic mission conditions.
- Schedules: Will involve extended time away from daily on-site job duties to support sensitive off-site transport operations under extended work conditions from 2 days to 7 days on the road at a time while working closely in a team driving environment.
- Safe and Secure Transportation: Operate specialized CMVs to transport NNC cargo in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as NNSA security protocols and guidelines.
- Vehicle Operation and Maintenance: Conduct pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspections of vehicles and cargo, ensuring all equipment is in safe operating condition. Report any maintenance issues or deficiencies promptly. Maintain accurate logs and records related to vehicle operation, mileage, and cargo.
- Cargo Handling and Security: Oversee the loading, securing, and unloading of NNC cargo, ensuring proper handling to prevent damage and maintain security integrity throughout transit. Adhere to all classified and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) handling procedures as applicable to the cargo being transported.
- Communication and Reporting: Communicate effectively with dispatch, project leads, and security personnel regarding trip status, potential delays, or incidents. Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to and manage emergency situations during transport, following established NNSA and site-specific protocols.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with coordinated planning teams, security personnel, and other NNSA site representatives to ensure efficient and effective transportation operations.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
- Master's degree: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
- OR Applicants without a bachelor's degree may be considered based on a combination of at least 10 years of completed education and/or relevant experience.

Preferred Job Requirements
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements (e.g., hazardous materials) as required by the specific NNC cargo and vehicle configuration.
- Security Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a Q-level security clearance or higher, as required by the Department of Energy for access to and handling of sensitive NNC materials and information.
- Human Reliability Program (HRP): Ability to obtain and maintain certification in the 10 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 712 HRP. This includes meeting all medical, psychological, and trustworthiness criteria, and complying with ongoing monitoring requirements.
- Experience: Proven experience as a CMV operator, preferably in a secure or sensitive cargo environment. Experience with specialized transportation equipment is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Regulations: In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, federal motor carrier safety regulations (FMCSR), and NNSA transportation policies and security directives.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to pass and maintain DOT/HRP physical examination requirements. Must be able to perform duties that may involve sitting for extended periods, as well as lifting, bending, and securing cargo.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with team members, supervisors, and security personnel, and to complete required documentation.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to assess situations rapidly and make sound independent decisions under pressure, particularly in unexpected or emergency scenarios.
- Reliability and Professionalism: Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, and adherence to strict protocols.
