What You'll Do
The Engineering Commercial Construction Office (ECCO) Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) Design Plan Reviewer will be responsible for reviewing detailed design plans, as-built drawings, one-line diagrams, specifications, submittals for commercial-like, non-nuclear, non-complex construction projects and issuing construction permits. Fire protection systems include fire sprinkler/extinguisher systems, fire protection water supply systems, fire detection and alarm systems, other special hazard systems, and emergency lighting systems.
The ECCO FPE will provide essential engineering technical support to implement these designs, ensuring compliance with plant design criteria and all national fire protection codes and standards (e.g., National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Building Code (IBC), etc.). Throughout these tasks, the ECCO FPE will effectively and cooperatively work as a team member within an integrated project team or as a technical lead for multi-discipline tasks, routinely providing input to system engineers and other plant stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Foundations: Basic understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and practices, demonstrated through experience in researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.
- Knowledge of, and experience in, related engineering disciplines.
- Take ownership of tasks and contributions to deliverables, actively working towards project milestones and programmatic objectives.
- Understanding of industry and regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to various engineering disciplines.
- Ensure safety and security compliance, maintain required training, and integrate safety and security into every task, with the authority to stop work if unsafe or compromising security.
- Knowledge of facility business and operations support, resources, practices, processes, and policies needed to solve problems and accomplish work.
- Hands-On Project Experience: Familiarity with analysis or testing in areas such as electronics, signal analysis, control systems, data acquisition, and data analysis, gained through class projects and/or work experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing research and development and ability to act as an independently functioning skilled contributor for assigned projects.
- Computer-literacy and good working knowledge of software tools that support architectural design activities, including computer-aided design (CAD).
- Ability to prepare, read, and/or interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Ability to review projects for technical accuracy.
- Skills in effective planning, writing, organization, communication, schedule compliance, personnel management, and design management.
- Ability to present information clearly and effectively through oral and written communication.
- Ability to conduct formal presentations to plant personnel and other interested parties.
- Ability to work effectively in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines, customers, and stakeholders.
- Ability to follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process.
- Ability to estimate, plan, and track progress for the preparation of discipline deliverables.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering/science discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
- OR a Master's degree in engineering/science discipline with no required experience
- OR a PhD degree in engineering/science discipline with no required experience
Department Of Energy (DOE) Order 426.2A Requirements
- In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protecting Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents thru ABET Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA)
- A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is preferred for up to four years post-graduation, confirmed by transcript at the time of offer. Beyond four years from graduation, relevant experience will supersede GPA in hiring considerations.
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Master's degree with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA
- PhD with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Professional Engineering License (PE).
- Proven experience in code compliance and interpreting national codes, standards, and regulations.
- Ability to maintain awareness of the latest codes, standards, and regulations governing fire protection and life safety.
- Ability to evaluate and provide feedback on design plans, permits, design drawings, diagrams, and requirements.
- Take ownership of tasks and contributions to deliverables, actively working towards project milestones and programmatic objectives.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
