Job Description
Supervises work of chemical operators and other hourly personnel in chemical processing areas of the Production Division for 12 hour shifts. Provides leadership in maintaining safety awareness and compliance with the procedures under Conduct of Operations.
This position is a supervisor which will fill in for the AA-DD 12 Hour Shift Supervisors when they are unavailable.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
- Provides leadership in maintaining safe working conditions and is proactive in preventing injuries, radiological and/or beryllium contamination and other chemical and hazardous exposures to the workforce
- Ensures the principles of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) and Integrated Safeguards and Security Management (ISSM) and ALARA practices are used for all operations
- Ensures strict application of regulations for security and plant protection and participates in the formal safety investigations of all accidents involving his/her employees
- Plans, schedules, and supervises work of chemical operators and other hourly personnel in crews of approximately 3 - 5 employees; occasionally supervises more than 10 employees
- Assigns, directs, and monitors work to meet production quality and schedule requirements
- Ensures that supervised personnel read and understand applicable requirements, timely orders, procedures, and policies prior to performing activities
- Reads, interprets, and works from engineering drawings, written or oral instructions, sketches, and specifications to develop assignments
- Matches task requirements to employee training and qualifications, skills, and experience and assures that all workers are qualified/certified for assigned work
- Instructs employees in the use of safety devices, equipment, recommended work procedures, and special methods and techniques
- Ensures that tools and equipment are in proper working condition and that necessary materials and supplies are available in a timely manner
- Responsible for budget performance including worker productivity, direct and indirect hours
- Handles all personnel matters associated with work group
- Interviews, hires or makes hiring recommendations; evaluates performance, coaches, counsels, rewards, and disciplines employees, as appropriate; trains and develops staff
- Handles employee complaints and resolves personnel problems
- Ensures that approved procedures, environmental regulations, criticality and facility safety requirements, and operating practices are in accordance with Conduct of Operations requirements
- Participates in the development, review, and approval of administrative and technical procedures to ensure safety, health, criticality/facility safety, security, quality, and conduct of operations requirements are appropriately instituted
- Serves as a communication link between hourly, supervisory/management, and technical support personnel including problem identification and resolution
- Leads and monitors assigned operations personnel to ensure work meets production quality and schedule requirements
- Maintains awareness and keeps appropriate personnel informed of equipment status and conditions by maintaining floor presence in the operational area during shift turnover and periodically during the shift
- Responds promptly to problems in the assigned facility; directs and ensures appropriate corrective actions are taken

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
- Thirteen or more years of education and/or relevant experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., High School diploma and 3 years nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative)
- May require certification or qualification in administrative and technical procedures associated with Conduct of Operations, maintenance, and the assigned production processes
Preferred Job Requirements
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of functions, e.g., operations, maintenance, technical, and craft personnel, are required; must understand and be able to administer the bargaining unit contract
- Some technical trade school, college, and/or chemical operations experience is preferred
- Prior experience in supervising chemical operations personnel is preferred
- Also, a strong working knowledge of chemical processing methods, procedures, equipment, and safety awareness of chemical operations and weapons quality requirements is preferred
Certificates/Security Clearances/Other
Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
