Overview:
The Quantum Heterostructures Group is seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral position in quantum information science. You will conduct experimental research at the intersection of quantum information science and fundamental materials science focused on understanding the coherent dynamics of optically accessible spins in bulk and van der Waals materials in the presence of controlled spin baths. The candidate will measure and manipulate single- and ensemble-spin defects at temperatures of 50 mK-350 K and at fields of up to 15 T with a particular emphasis on controlling coherent spin-spin interactions. In addition, the ideal candidate will develop new quantum sensing protocols leveraging coherent spin dynamics in high-field and low temperature environments. You will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team with expertise in quantum sensing, quantum optics, materials synthesis and processing, and condensed matter theory. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures Group, Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Development of new protocols to control coherent spin dynamics for optically accessible spin defects.
- Enable new spin-based quantum sensing protocols in low temperature and high field environments.
- Maintain and perform research with cryogenic microscopes.
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in quantum science, physics, materials science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
- Previous research experience in quantum sensing, quantum photonics, cryogenic spectroscopies, or nanophotonics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with spin-based quantum sensors.
- Experience with dilution refrigeration.
- Experience with microwave electronics.
- Experience processing van der Waals materials and heterostructures.
- Strong programming and data visualization skills.
- A strong record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
Postdocs:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
