The Staff Auditor supports the Internal Audit department in performing financial, operational, compliance, and data-driven audits at Argonne National Laboratory.
This role offers hands-on experience in auditing, data analytics, and compliance with federal requirements while working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. You will work under close supervision, receive structured training, and contribute to audits that support the laboratory’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in planning, conducting, and documenting audits of financial, operational, compliance, contract, and IT areas in accordance with Institute of Internal Audit (IIA) Standards.
- Perform data analytics to identify trends, anomalies, or risks within laboratory datasets.
- Support testing of internal controls for compliance with DOE orders, FAR requirements, and other federal guidelines.
- Assist with audits of cost allowability, subcontractor oversight, procurement processes, and indirect cost allocations.
- Develop and maintain organized, accurate audit workpapers.
- Help prepare audit findings, recommendations, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Participate in follow-up reviews to verify the implementation of corrective actions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Internal Audit function.
- Participate in training to build expertise in federal contractor and national laboratory auditing practices.

Position Requirements
Applicants must have the ability to demonstrate the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Data Analytics / Data Science, Statistics or a related field deemed appropriate by the Chief Audit Executive.
- Knowledge of, or coursework in, auditing principles, internal controls, or risk assessment.
- Intermediate proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power Query, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, or Power BI).
- Ability to clean, transform, and interpret large datasets.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail skills and the ability to multi-task in a quick paced environment often with changing priorities.
- Working knowledge of federal regulations (e.g., Department of Energy rules, Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), OMB Uniform Guidance).
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications
- Progress toward a professional certification such as CIA, CPA, CISA, or other audit/accounting credential approved by Chief Audit Executive.
- Familiarity with internal control frameworks (COSO, GAO Green Book) and risk assessment methodologies.
- Exposure to auditing, accounting, or compliance work (including internships, academic projects, or entry-level positions).
- Experience in federal contractor, grant, or government auditing environments.
