Job Description
The Advanced Manufacturing & Design Group is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to engage in metal additive manufacturing and accelerated alloy discovery. The successful candidate will actively participate in hands-on experimentation with various metal additive manufacturing processes and material characterization techniques. Their work will contribute significantly to the discovery and development of refractory and high entropy alloys, as well as the development of near net shape components for mission-critical applications.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct hands-on experimental research in Directed Energy Deposition (DED), Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), and Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF).
- Perform detailed material characterization using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD).
- Undertake mechanical testing of materials to evaluate properties and performance.
- Engage in high-throughput alloy discovery and development projects.
- Perform thermodynamic simulations to predict material behaviors and interactions.
- Apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to enhance materials discovery and process optimization.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and university/industry partners.
- Publish research findings in high-impact scientific journals and present at conferences.
- Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and progress reports for funding agencies.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in material characterization techniques including SEM, XRD, EBSD, and mechanical testing.
- Familiarity with thermodynamic simulations and alloy design principles.
- Knowledge of AI and ML applications in materials science is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
