Job Description
The AI Application Developer at Savannah River National Laboratory Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) will design, build, and deploy artificial (AI) models that improve business operations and decision-making. This role focuses on developing practical AI and machine learning solutions that streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and provide actionable insights across the laboratory’s operational landscape. The developer will work closely with business units, data scientists, and IT teams to translate operations needs into functional AI applications that integrate within our enterprise environment.
This position has the following objectives
- Design and implement AI/ML models that support and optimize SRNL’s business operations.
- Translate business challenges into data-driven AI solutions.
- Ensure models are developed with scalability, security, and compliance in mind.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver usable, integrated AI applications.
- Support SRNL’s broader AI strategy by building repeatable, sustainable AI development practices.
Responsibilities
- Develop, train, and validate AI/ML models tailored to business and operational use cases.
- Work with structured and unstructured data to prepare datasets for modeling.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define requirements and success criteria for AI solutions.
- Integrate AI models into applications, workflows, and enterprise systems.
- Monitor model performance and retrain as needed to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Apply MLOps practices for model deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
- Document development processes, code, and best practices for knowledge sharing.
- Stay current with emerging AI tools, frameworks, and techniques applicable to business operations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Science, Engineering, or a related STEM technical field.
- 4-6 years of experience in AI/ML model development or application development.
- Proficiency with AI/ML concepts and common tools (e.g. Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
- Strong understanding of data preparation, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
- Knowledge of MLOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Ability to work with APIs and integrate AI models into applications or workflows.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, AI/ML, or related technical field.
- Experience applying AI/ML to business operations, logistics, or enterprise applications.
- Familiarity with cloud-based AI/ML environments (Azure AI Foundry, AWS SageMaker, GCP Vertex AI).
- Experience with natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, or predictive analytics.
- Familiarity with DOE, government, or other regulated IT environments.
- Track record of delivering production-ready AI applications in complex environments.
