Savannah River National Laboratory’s Environmental and Legacy Management (ELM) directorate is seeking a highly experienced Environmental Engineer/Geochemist to join their Environmental Sciences and Dosimetry team. This role is focused on leading, advancing, and applying geochemistry, geological and/or environmental engineering principles in a research and development (R&D) setting to anticipate and deliver innovative solutions in support of the Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Management (EM) mission.
This position will involve the development of innovative solutions for technically, challenging environmental concerns to facilitating closure of DOE’s complex soil and groundwater issues within the existing regulatory framework, The focus is developing site specific technical strategies to facilitate closure, address emerging contaminants (i.e. PFAS) and conduct research on diverse, multidisciplinary environmental challenges. Includes working with a technical team for implementation of new technologies, expediting project completion, mentoring early-career staff, cultivating team interactions, and establishing a robust customer interface with personnel from the site and DOE Headquarters.
Responsibilities
The work scope will involve performing and integrating R&D for soil and groundwater remediation/treatment, environmental characterization, contaminant fate and transport, environmental science/engineering consulting, waste management, pollution prevention and applying cost-efficient techniques. This includes deploying new technologies specific to site conditions using creative applications of biogeochemical and hydrological science, and optimizing existing technologies/systems for environmental clean-up.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS + 12-15 yrs; PhD + 5-9 yrs
- Degree in one of the following: geochemistry, environmental science or engineering, geology, hydrogeology, soil science/chemistry, chemical engineering, or related earth/aquatic sciences field.
- Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in one or more of the following: environmental remediation, aqueous geochemistry, soil chemistry, contaminant fate and transport, and redox chemistry.
- Interest in laboratory and field studies.
- Oral communication/technical writing and Soft skills.
- Demonstrated ability in collaborating on teams with technical personnel
- Ability to obtain a DOE Security Clearance for which U.S. Citizenship is legally required.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD + 10-15 years of experience performing environmental remediation relative to contaminants of concerns like organics, metals & radionuclides, and anthropogenic impacts.
- Experience working with/for the U.S. Department of Energy, National Laboratories and/or other governmental agencies and federal contractors.
- Strong written/oral communication skills with a demonstrated history of technical reports and publications.
- Demonstrated success in leading technical teams and project management.
