Job Description
The Global Security Directorate at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position for inorganic mass spectrometry. The successful applicant will initially support research and development projects at SRNL with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometers (TIMS). These instruments will be used to measure and quantify ultra-low levels of radionuclides in environmental samples to support a wide variety of applications such as national security R&D, environmental R&D efforts such as investigating isotopic fractionation in biota, and further development of software and methods for statistical evaluation of mass spectrometric data. All SRNL Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are fixed term assignments within the company and benefits eligible.
Responsibilities
- Perform ion exchange chromatography of environmental samples.
- Operate both inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (quadrupole-based and multi-collector ICP-MSs) and thermal ionization mass spectrometers.
- Measure samples to support different R&D project tasks and milestones.
- Develop R&D ideas into proposals seeking new funding.
- Perform R&D research that can be published in peer-reviewed publications.
- Write scripts for the statistical evaluation of both measured and synthetic data.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD + 0-1 years in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, or equivalent STEM field.
- Individuals must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the start of employment.
- For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is LegallyRequired
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an ultra-trace clean lab environment (Class 100 and 1000 clean rooms).
- Experience operating and troubleshooting plasma source and thermal ionization mass spectrometers.
- Experience with seeking external funding.
- Strong publication record.
- Proficient in R and/or Python.
