Overview:
The Fusion Energy Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks applications for a Mechanical Designer. The selected candidate will focus on the modeling, design and detailing of components and assemblies for major international fusion experimental facilities in support of ongoing science and technology research for the U.S. Department of Energy.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will work on the design, development and improvement of fusion technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
- Significant experience with one or more CAD programs such as Creo (formerly Pro/Engineer), SolidWorks or Catia is required.
- Collaboration with senior designers, engineers, and physicists in the creation of 3D components and assemblies will be a regular function of the position.
- The candidate will create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication and communicate with engineering and design staff through the fabrication and assembly process, and so will require the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and American Welding Society (AWS) notation.
- The position will support senior technical staff in a variety of projects involving vacuum, cryogenics, high pressure, and electromagnetic fields.

Basic Qualifications:
- This position requires a two-year AS degree with 5-10 years relevant experience or high school diploma with 15 years relevant experience is required.
- Mastery of Creo (Pro/Engineer), SolidWorks or Catia V5 is required.
- Experience with the application of GD&T and weld notation on a 2D drawing is required.
- Familiarity with fabrication processes and design for manufacturability is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in using both multiple CAD software is preferred.
- Experience in the design of components related to vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, or plasma physics experiments is preferred.
- Candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently or in a team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal are expected.
