Project Overview
Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
UPF will be a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar project and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.
The UPF Construction project works on various schedules with differing start times, and may require employees to work overtime, weekends, and/or nightshift when a business need arises.
Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.
Job Summary
In this role, you will plan, develop, and review electrical engineering design work, produce drawings and documentation, and prepare design estimates for a project. You will coordinate with clients, facilitate technical discussions, and review key electrical drawings, calculations, and bid summaries. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure electrical designs comply with all regulations and standards.
The Electrical Designer will be responsible for raceway design, equipment location and layout, C&R schedule inputting and updating using Setroute, conduit, and raceway design. Responsible to produce lower and higher tier drawings and documentation in accordance with established conceptual design and scope, modelling, including cable pull calculations, design of lighting using AGi32, grounding layout, grounding designs/calculations and lightning protection systems. Develops specifications for equipment and material where deviation from standard documentation is required.
Major Responsibilities
Level 1
- Leads or administers work of electrical designers and drafters for a business line technology to include the preparation of layouts, study drawings, detailed 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models and construction drawings.
- Develops designs for complete and complex electrical engineering systems such as earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing with minimum supervision from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed.
- Ensures electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
- Monitors and checks work for compliance with approved electrical design standards to provide quality design, reliable/safe plant operation and construction economy.
- Prepares design and drafting procedures to standardize design effort.
- Reviews electrical design scope changes, as required, for project management.
- Ensures Electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
Level 2
- Produces drawings and documentation in accordance with established design and scope including design of earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing. Ensures electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
- Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of electrical engineers, scientists, specialists, designers and drafters.
- Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
- Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of electrical design estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
- Develops Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Bechtel Design Guides, appropriate Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) and administrative practices.
- Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
Education And Experience Requirements
Level 1
- Requires associate's degree (or international equivalent) and 7-10 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience
Level 2
- Requires associate's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-12 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Hands-on Microsoft office programs and other computer programs.
- Experience with SmartPlant 3D, Smart Sketch, MicroStation CAD design tools.
- Familiar with schematics, electrical equipment layouts, cable trays, conduits and supports.
- Extensive knowledge of electrical raceway and electrical equipment layouts.
- Must have experience with an electronic Cable Management System, such as the SETROUTE program, and be able to input and complete corrections to the database.
- Extensive knowledge & application of NEC Code and ANSI/IEEE Standards.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and work well with others and within a team. Must be able to collaborate well with other disciplines.
- Ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
- Experience in construction interface and resolving field problems.
- Excellent oral & written communications skills.
- Hands-on experience with SETROUTE program, Modelling in S3D, cable pull calculation, lighting analysis using AGI32 software.
- Hands-on use in a 3D electrical model design platform and electrical design.
- Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience.
- Familiar with Bechtel standard programs.
- Knowledge of design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPS).
