Purpose:
The Building Equipment Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Research and Development Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to advanced building equipment for residential and commercial sectors, including but not limited to air conditioning systems (including heat pumps) and commercial refrigeration systems. You will be involved in leading the design and development of experimental setups to study compressors technologies including scroll, reciprocating, rotary, linear and other novel types. You will also perform in depth analysis of the results and developing models as needed by the projects. Your responsibilities will also include the preparation of technical/scientific reports and research publications. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with high-level researchers/technologists from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.
Basic Qualifications:
- You must have earned a Ph.D. or an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with at least 5 years (after acquiring a Ph.D.) or 10 years (after acquiring an M.S.) of experience.
- You should possess the necessary background and experience in vapor compression systems for heating, cooling and refrigeration; application of low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants; and development of compression technologies.
- Strong fundamental knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy conversion is desired.
- You should demonstrate the ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians to successfully design, build and evaluate advanced building equipment.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
- The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events is required. Finally, you should have strong, proven publication/patent record.

Preferred Qualifications:
- In-depth knowledge about the research development of compressor technologies using experimental and theoretical techniques is highly desirable.
