On-site firefighter, primarily working within the 5,000 acres, 300+ building Brookhaven National Laboratory site for the Laboratory Protection Division.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Fire suppression, medical response, hazardous material response, technical rescue and building fire inspection while taking proper action to ensure the safety and protection of people, equipment, and property. Firefighters are skilled in firematic procedures, the use of emergency equipment, and emergency medical assistance. Firefighter may be required to perform such duties off site and perform assigned duties in fire inspection, test, and maintenance. Firefighters must maintain services and operate a variety of tools and equipment relating to fire prevention, fire, rescue, and emergency medical assistance. Firefighters may be assigned special and routine training assignments and drills.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
• A minimum of five years progressive experience in a volunteer or career fire department. Current New York State EMT-B with at least three years continuous certification.
• Certification as a motor pump operator on a Class A pumper through New York State, Suffolk or Nassau Counties required
• Firefighter I Certification
• New York State Certified Hazardous Materials Technician or equivalent based on curriculum
• New York State Certified in Confined Space Rescue or equivalent based on curriculum
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Firefighter 2 Certification
• Fire Inspector 1 certification
• Trench Rescue Technician
• High Angle Rescue
• Rapid Intervention Team Training
• Aerial or Ladder Operations
• NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800
• Experience serving as a line officer and progressive experience in a volunteer or career fire department.
• Possession of an associate degree or higher in fire protection technology or related field is also desirable.
Environment, Safety & Health Requirements:
• The ability to successfully complete and pass an extensive medical physical, stress, and functional capacity tests.
• Must be willing to work 24 hour shifts and holidays at the completion of a 15-week training period.
