Maintaining and protecting the radiological safety and health of BNL employees, the public and the environment is our mission. Our professionals and technicians are certified and provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by use of field deployed Facility Support personnel, an accredited Personnel Monitoring service, a fully functional Instrumentation & Calibration facility, expertise in Radiological Engineering and the handling of Isotopes and Special Nuclear Materials.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research. The Radiological Control Division (RCD) is seeking a qualified Radiological Control Technician (RCT) to help implement the BNL Radiological Control Program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- The primary function of the RCT is to provide field support to the Department/Organization where they are assigned with primary emphasis in Health Physics and radiological protection.
- Perform radiological surveys for areas and release of materials.
- Issue TLDs and review TLD exposure results Perform radiation exposure investigations.
- Evaluate radiological work.
- Assist in the development of radiological work permits and implement controls consistent with As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and practices.
- Provide industrial hygiene and industrial safety support by monitoring work activities for adherence to BNL and Occupational Safety and Health standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years relevant work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years relevant experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;
- 8 years relevant work experience.
- Must possess current 40-hour HAZWOPER training or be capable of passing HAZWOPER training.
- Must be respirator qualified or capable of obtaining respirator qualifications.
- Must have the ability to follow procedures and maintain all training and qualifications.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite; especially Outlook and Word.
- Requires material handling of up to 30 lbs.
- Relevant work experience must be as a RCT (commercial nuclear, NRC or Agreement State Licensee, DOD, or DOE) performing radiation-protection work activities.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years relevant work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years relevant experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
- 10 years relevant work experience.
- National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT)
- Meet the minimum qualifications specified in DOE-STD-1107-97.
- Possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities for Radiation Protection Positions at DOE Facilities.
- Successfully completed the Department of Energy (DOE) radiological control standardized RCT core requirements and is or previously qualified as an ANSI 3.1 qualified RCT.

You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
