The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a one-year appointment with an opportunity for a one-year renewal to perform research in the area of electric power grids.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform cyber-physical system modeling and simulation for the power grid.
• Perform research on power system dynamics and control under high inverter-based resources (IBRs).
• Develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) techniques for power system planning, operation, control, and cybersecurity.
Position Requirements:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• A Ph.D. with a broad knowledge of electric power systems.
• A strong background in artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) applications in the power grid.
• Experience with power system modeling, simulation, dynamics and/or optimization, phasor and electromagnetic transient (EMT)-based modeling, and Python and/or Matlab programming.
• Good written and oral communication skills, be willing to take direction, and be able to work with others as part of a project team.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Experience with commonly used tools such as OPAL-RT/RTDS, PSS/E, PSCAD, EXata.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity of industrial control systems and/or quantum computing.
BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70,200 - $85,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
