OverviewThe Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.
PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.
Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.
ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Physical & Computational Sciences is responsible for providing inspirational leadership and direction to the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD), shaping its strategic vision, and driving excellence in science and technology. The ALD reports directly to the Laboratory Director and is a member of the Laboratory Leadership Team. This position fosters collaboration and effective communication across PNNL organizations and ensures the attainment of scientific and technical objectives. This position also is accountable for obtaining programmatic funding, achieving financial targets, and overseeing the operational success of the directorate in partnership with support professionals. The ALD is responsible for building relationships with key stakeholders such as the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, other federal sponsors, state funding agencies, business and industry partners, research groups, and elected officials.
Job Duties include:
- Strategic Planning and Investment: Lead the formulation and implementation of strategic S&T objectives that align with the Laboratory's mission and vision. Develop well-substantiated strategies to expand programs and identify new opportunities where the Directorate provides critical support to DOE and other sponsor missions, aiming for national impact.
- Relationship Management: Cultivate strategic and influential relationships with Laboratory sponsors, university research leaders, industry leaders, and internal stakeholders. Foster cooperation and collaboration across PNNL, other DOE Laboratories, and Battelle to drive mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Capability Development: Develop and maintain a highly productive technical resource base within assigned capability areas. Lead the development of top-tier scientific and managerial talent, ensuring the Directorate possesses the highest quality staff and capabilities.
- Expert Delivery: Oversee the successful delivery of projects and programs, exceeding sponsor expectations and enhancing PNNL's reputation. Manage the Directorate with a focus on safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
- Stakeholder Communication: Effectively communicate relevant information to stakeholders, including DOE and other federal sponsors, state funding agencies, business and industry partners, university, and research groups, elected officials, and the local community.
- Record of and commitment to using best practices for managing administrative activities for an organization (e.g., human resources; environment, safety, and health; quality; security; and facilities management).
- Ability to build and use professional network to attract renowned research collaborators.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in science or engineering and 18+ years of increasing responsibility within a combination of research and research management.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. preferred.
10 years of line management and/or significant technical program management experience.
Proven experience leading strategically and developing creative, innovative solutions in a large, complex, multidisciplinary technical organization with significant fiscal and programmatic responsibilities.
Proven track record in developing, leading, and managing physical and computational sciences programs, particularly in a DOE National Laboratory or other complex setting.
Experience and knowledge with DOE scientific user facilities and their potential for accelerating scientific discovery and impact.
Ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance.
