What You'll Do
The Discipline Manager of Welding position is responsible for providing leadership and oversight to Welding Engineering Design groups supporting the Projects Engineering organization. This group consists of engineers, technical support personnel, and potentially subcontract employees. The Welding Engineering Discipline Manager assigns staff to support projects, drives technical processes, is responsible for the technical accuracy of all deliverables and is accountable for the group’s performance of the established scope of work within budget and schedule. Also responsible for maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness, establishing goals and expectations and providing technical and professional growth for employees. Advises senior leadership of staffing needs necessary to address both forecast and emerging workload.
Demonstrated knowledge of Welding Engineering Design. Able to: a) track, trend and schedule work; and b) manage individual contributors and balance workload and priorities across multiple groups. Familiar with managerial techniques such as tracking, trending, scheduling and cost estimating.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering/science discipline from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant welding engineering experience.
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major and 4 years nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Preferred Job Requirements
- A Professional Engineering (PE) License
- Knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines being supervised to provide comprehensive direction to staff and work groups. Knowledgeable of Y-12 business and operations support, resources, practices, processes, and policies needed to solve problems and accomplish work
- Skills in effective planning, writing, organization, communication, schedule compliance, personnel management and design management
- Computer-literate and have good working knowledge of software tools that support engineering design activities including computer-aided design
- Extensive technical expertise and full knowledge of related engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers
- Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to various engineering disciplines
- Ability to apply technical skills of engineering to the design of facilities and/or appurtenances to facilities
- Ability to prepare, read, and/or interpret complex engineering drawings
- Ability to conduct formal presentations to plant personnel and other interested parties
- Ability to review projects for technical accuracy
- Ability to present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word
