What You'll Do
General duties of a Maintenance Machinist include all aspects of maintaining equipment in various shops - machine shops, fabrications shop, graphite shop and special materials shops. The duties include : equipment installation, system and component troubleshooting, removing and replacing components, component repair and rebuild, performing adjustments, assisting in equipment retrofits and upgrades, performing geometry and alignment checks, performing hand scraping to bring machines back to OEM alignments and accuracies, and capability of operating all equipment maintained.
Equipment to be maintained includes manual machines varying in size from pedestal grinders to large horizontal boring mills and large vertical turning lathes. CNC machines range in size for small tool room lathes to large gantry milling machines. Special machines include wire and sinker EDMs, water jet cutting machines, 3D printers, water die forming machines and evaporators. All systems on these machines are maintained. Equipment features include hydraulic systems, lubrication systems, pneumatic systems, counterbalance systems, belting and gearing drive trains, air bearing spindles, air bearing machine slides, on-machine tool setters, part-holding vacuum systems, part-holding fixtures, machine coolant systems and demineralized water systems. The CNC machines are equipped with various model of controllers that require operation and the population of axes compensation tables.
Maintenance support equipment used include precision bubble levels, electronic indicators, granite squares and parallel bars, laser system (linear and rotary), electronic levels, ball bar system, precision master tooling balls, precision measuring instruments, scrapers and scraping masters.
Ability to use manufacturer's manuals in hard copy and/or CD format is a necessity. Reading blueprints and understanding hydraulic, lubrication, pneumatic, and piping schematics is required. Must have working knowledge of all bearing types. In-house training sessions are required for "on or near" electrical circuits, performing Lockout/Tagout, elevated work, fork truck operation, below-the-hook lifting devices and hoist use. Safety equipment training includes use of protective clothing, familiarization with the use of safety harnesses, safety shoes and safety glasses. Off-site training is required for new and specialized equipment, e.g., lasers and ball bar systems. Specific training is required for shops that have special materials, chemicals, contaminated materials and equipment.

Minimum Job Requirements
- A minimum of a high school diploma or an equivalent is required.
- Requires trade school or apprenticeship training with four years of experience or 6 years' experience in operation and maintenance of all types and models of machine shop equipment and machine shop accessories.
- Working knowledge of shop mathematics and a clear understanding of machine tool geometry and alignments and fixes to correct out-of-alignment errors to tight tolerances are essential.
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A: (i.e., High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
