What You'll Do
As a technical point of contact for various plant systems in a DOE Production Facility, coordinates configuration management activities, assesses system health and performance, and provides overall technical responsibility for packaging activities. Works in conjunction with the assigned Engineering Design Authority Representative to implement the Configuration Management program for the assigned system(s) and/or product(s). Prepares configuration control packages for tasks; evaluates the impact of proposed changes and/or modifications to approved safety authorization bases for facilities; and performs troubleshooting and improvement activities. Applies the systems and equipment expertise needed to resolve technical system and equipment issues in cooperation with other related disciplines.
- Support the design and procurement of shipping/storage containers/components used at Y-12 including supporting change management documentation.
- Perform inspections of products at vendor sites.
- Create documentation identifying deficiencies in products such as Requests for Waivers or Deviations.
- Prepare and/or serve as processor/evaluator for Nonconformance Reports associated with packaging components or assemblies.
- Serve as Subcontract Technical Representative on Packaging & Transportation procurements.
- Serve as the technical contact for all questions/issues that arise during fabrication, inspection, and acceptance efforts of packaging components.
- Work closely with multiple organizations at Y-12 including Criticality Safety, Facility Safety, Mechanical Engineering, Projects, Production, Quality, and Development on packaging designs, procurements, change requests, and implementation.
- Assist Y-12 customers with Stores purchases to ensure production needs are met.
- Establish critical characteristics for products.
- Prepare Grading Worksheets for onsite containers and other SSCs for use at multiple facilities.
- Prepare datasheets, equipment specifications, TBIS and QLDs for packaging components.
- Prepare Statements of Work for testing of packaging components and oversee performance testing at vendor sites as required.
- Perform all phases of packaging component procurement including design, specifications, contracting, receipt acceptance and implementation.
- Perform design verification of Packaging & Transportation design packages.
- Prepare and present change packages to the Operation Safety Board as the System Engineer for Packaging and Transportation Engineeringand collecting approved documentation in support of the changes.

Minimum Job Requirements - Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering /Physical science. OR PhD in Engineering /Physical science.
- There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) with up to 5 years relevant experience
- Obtained the System Engineer Qualification
- Experience in a manufacturing
- Experience in a NRC or DOE regulated environment is desirable. Requires an understanding of Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Operations, and Conduct of Maintenance for facilities operating within a nuclear regulated environment
- Experience in Integrated Safety Management is a plus
- A working knowledge of DOT/NNSA/NRC requirements for packaging and transportation and storage of hazardous and radioactive materials.
