Overview:
We are seeking an Instrument technician who will focus on audio-visual (AV) support and personal computer (PC) maintenance. This position resides in the Instrumentation and Controls Group in the Fabrication, Instrumentation and Inspection Division under Facilities and Operations Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our service team, you will be responsible for handling event support in all conference rooms, auditoriums and off-site events for Oak Ridge National Lab. You will handle installation and troubleshooting of AV room systems and provide assistance to end users as necessary. Additionally, you will provide hardware and software support for office and laboratory computer systems, printers, and peripheral devices.
The AV / PC technician shop is within the operations support side of the Instrumentation and Controls group. The operations group also supports the data center, fiber and network infrastructure, public address systems, access control, security systems, and radio systems at the laboratory.
The parent group, Instrumentation and Control Services, is also responsible for operation, installation, maintenance, and calibration of a wide range of equipment, including areas of electronic, pneumatic, and microprocessor-based equipment used to measure and control variables such as flow, level, pressure, temperature, motion, force, radiation, and chemical composition. Additionally, they also perform NIST traceable high accuracy (Metrology) calibrations.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Interact with the customer to provide customer support and education.
- Identify potential needs, ability to troubleshoot.
- Participate in pre-job briefings and work controls, provide input into procedures.
- Conduct preventative maintenance activities, perform operational checks/tests.
- Install various types of Audio-Visual and Computer equipment.
- Build and repair equipment, cables, fiber, and systems.
- Setup and run Zoom and Teams meetings for a multitude of environments.

Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 6 year of experience of relevant hands-on maintenance experience in the repair of electronics systems and industrial instrumentation or an equivalent combination of education and Audio-Visual experience is required for the position.
- Will be required to maintain lab-appointed electrical worker qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A 2-year degree in Electronics or related field or equivalent military or technical school training.
- Ability to understand and support events using installed and portable audio-visual systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot AV systems and components.
- Knowledge of reading system drawings and understanding of signal flow.
- Experience with operating/programming video switching devices, audio processors/consoles, and AV control systems.
- Experience with installation and repair of computer equipment/parts.
- Experience with Mac, PC, and or Linux operating systems and their configuration.
- Certification for repair/Installation (Dell, HP, Apple, Dante, Avixa etc.) is preferred.
- Knowledge of how to work in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to edit postproduction video/audio.
- Can type at least 60 words per minute.
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
- HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
