Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Training Instructor who will focus on performing instructional duties related to the delivery of enterprise Technical Training compliance courses. Programs included are Electrical Safety, Hoisting & Rigging, Fall Protection, HAZWOPER, Confined Space, and various other Environment, Safety and Health-related topics. This position resides in the Office of Technical Training (OTT) in the Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Directorate (ESH&Q), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Deliver approved courses, proctor examinations, implement practical exercises, and conduct associated administrative duties related to course delivery in accordance with the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) and the Standards Based Management System (SBMS).
- Monitor and manage registrations for assigned course offerings. This includes determining if class-size warrants conducting or cancelling classes and keeping learners informed of class logistics.
- Use the Learning Management System (LMS) for monitoring registrations, determining class assignments, setting delivery schedules, printing rosters, and verifying training records.
- Prepare for classroom and field delivery by preparing timelines, materials, registration details, classroom equipment and field equipment; Adapt or update instructional materials as directed to support learning objectives and delivery requirements. Perform class setup/teardown as required.
- Manage exam banks and exams responsibly.
- Complete attendance documentation expeditiously and maintain training records using approved technologies and systems to manage training data, records, and reporting, ensuring accurate and timely submission for course credit.
- Forecast learner demand and assist with scheduling course offerings accordingly using Learning Management System (LMS) data.
- Acquire and maintain class equipment (e.g., gear, PPE, electrical equipment, etc.) for safe classroom use.
- Perform customer and student notifications as needed.
- Report on course student (Level 1) evaluations by reviewing evaluation data to identify trends, training effectiveness, and opportunities for continuous improvement, and providing input to instructional designers and program leadership as requested. Participate in higher level evaluations upon request.
- Obtain and maintain subject matter knowledge for field of instruction, and qualifications as needed for Instruction and Instructional Technologist.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Technical Training requirements.
- Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers in a professional manner and assist visitors as needed.
- Utilize computer resources and classroom equipment to deliver training, generate classroom reports, develop instructor reports, book conference rooms, and interface with subject matter experts.
- Interface with subject matter experts and Instructional Technologists, accordingly, for classroom support and to support course design decisions, instructional methods, and learning activities aligned with training objectives.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS/BA degree in a technical field, training, or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience with delivering compliance training in an industrial or government setting.
- A background in OSHA compliance for industrial-related courses.
- A certification/qualification in Instructor Skills, Presentation Skills, or Basic Instructor Training as evidence of excellent classroom delivery, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Computer skills with demonstrated working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint are required.
- Must demonstrate a proven ability to meet the responsibilities of this position in a professional and ethical manner and must possess the ability to maintain a consistent work schedule during core hours to meet the needs of staff.
- Must be reliable, self-motivated, and focused on high-quality delivery of work products and possess superb organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Experience dealing with highly regulated training in a national laboratory or within the Department of Energy complex.
- Knowledge and experience with an enterprise-wide Learning Management System (LMS).
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation.
