What You'll Do
The Y-12 Director of Readiness Assurance is the Functional Area Manager (FAM) for the Y-12 Readiness Assurance program area, providing direction, structure, and leadership for the Y-12 Readiness Certification Assurance (RCA) program, Safety Basis Verification Review (SBVR) program, and the support provided to the Production Disciplined Operations initiative through performance of Production Evaluation Performance Reviews (PEPRs) and Production Readiness Re-Certification Process (PRRC) reviews. This program area supports the startup and restart of nuclear facilities, activities, and operations across the Y-12 Site, including the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF). This program implements DOE Order 425.1 and associated contractor requirement documents and DOE standards.
The position is a Director role reporting to the Senior Director of Quality Assurance, where the incumbent is fully responsible for providing strategic leadership, direction, and expertise for the Y-12 Readiness Assurance organizations.
The role of the Y-12 Director of Readiness Assurance is to provide multi-disciplinary leadership in achieving the mission, goals, and objectives for the Y-12 and UPF Readiness Assurance organizations.
In accomplishing this role, the Y-12 Director of Readiness Assurance will be responsible to:
- Maintain a DOE Order 425.1 compliant and effective readiness program by ensuring that the program related command media are current with contractual requirements and expectations
- Maintain a compliant and effective SBVR program consistent with guidance in DOE Order 423.1 by ensuring that the program related command media are current with guidance and expectations
- Provide leadership and direction to the staff of highly skilled and experienced individuals, serving as technical expert for operational readiness
- Ensure that tasks required for attaining operational readiness are successfully accomplished to support DOE mission needs and provide a capability that can withstand the scrutiny of contractually required operational readiness reviews
- Support the selection of the team leader and/or team members of review teams that will perform the Readiness Reviews (RRs) to verify operational readiness, as well as the team to perform the Safety Basis Implementation Verification Reviews (SBVRs) to verify that the requirements, assumptions, and controls from safety basis documents (DSA and TSR) are correctly captured in the documents and are fully implemented
- Ensure that expert-based training on the Y-12 Readiness Assurance Program is provided to a variety of individuals, including Facility, Operations, and Program and Project Managers
- Manage the organizational budget, track costs, and provide recommendations to Program Management related to requests for budget input, capital items, and staffing estimates
- Handle Director level organizational personnel matters, including interviews, hires, performance evaluations, rewards, and disciplinary actions
- Ensure that a rigorous training process is established to train the organization’s staff to perform their assigned functions. This includes the development of training elements and assignment of mentors for less experienced staff.
- Maintain an interface with the DOE Field Element Office Readiness point of contact and as needed with the Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board (DNFSB) resident inspectors

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree: Minimum 12 years of relevant experience. Minimum 5 years of management experience.
- This position requires a combination of technical and operational readiness experience and skills. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience in a combination of conducting operational readiness confirmation reviews (Readiness Assessments, Implementation Validation Reviews, and Operational Readiness Reviews) and/or in providing leadership in the attainment and validation of operational readiness for nuclear or high-hazard startups or restarts (preferably within the DOE, DOD, or commercial nuclear power industry).
- This position requires strong technical, organizational, communication, and team building skills, along with demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering or physical science preferred
- 15 years of nuclear experience preferred
- Project management experience preferred
- Familiarity with the requirements of 10 CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management, and experience with implementing requirements and controls in approved DOE Documented Safety Analysis and Technical Safety Requirements documents is highly desired.
- Experience in performing both the reviews and validation of the attainment of operational readiness is highly desirable and may be given greater credit over more general and less relevant experience.
