Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Fire Department Second Lieutenant and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will serve as a Second Lieutenant and will be responsible for reviewing daily Preventive Maintenance Inspections to ensure accuracy and completion. Completed reports shall be submitted to the Lieutenant for review. The Second Lieutenant will assist the on-scene Incident Commander during Fire, Medical, or Hazardous Materials responses and will review Fire Department reports for accuracy, ensuring timely completion.
This role includes supporting the Fire Department Training Chief by assisting with personnel scheduling and facilitating minor training activities as needed. The Second Lieutenant will submit training reports to the Training Chief for final review and will provide completed training rosters for approval and submission.
The Second Lieutenant will perform fire officer duties in accordance with established plans, procedures, and standard operating guidelines, or as directed by the Lieutenant or department manager. The position requires the ability to lead a crew and provide daily operational oversight to ensure deliverables are met. In the absence of the Lieutenant, the Second Lieutenant may be required to assume their duties and responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor's degree with no related experience, or
- Associate's degree with four (4) years of related experience, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with eight (8) years of related experience is required.
- Two (2) years of firefighting experience is required.
- Current NM or National Registry EMT Basic license.
- NFPA HAZMAT Awareness and Operations Level Certificate.
- NFPA 1001, Firefighter I and II Certificate.
- Valid Class "E" Driver's License.
Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
Preferred Requirements
- One (1) year of experience in a supervisory or management position.
- EMT-Paramedic (National Registry), Fire Instructor, Fire Officer 1/11 Certification are a plus.
- Previous Company Officer experience in a professional Fire Department is desired.
- ICS 300 and 400, Confined Space and High Angle Rescue IFSAC/ProBoard or equivalent Certifications are preferred.
- Haz-Mat Operations IFSAC/ProBoard or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience working at a DOE facility is a plus.

Exempt grade level(s) 28-30. Minimum salary $69,444 per year of a larger salary range --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
