Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Protective Force Second Lieutenant and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
Second Lieutenants work under the Protective Force Shift Supervisor (Lieutenant) providing leadership and support to their assigned crew; fulfilling all shift supervisor responsibilities when the Lieutenant is absent.
Provide security and law enforcement services to the WIPP, a Category 2 nuclear facility, during their assigned shift. Integrate into a team of Security Police Officers, ensuring they maintain the capability to support security operations. Complete or delegate tasks to ensure completion of routine patrols and activities as required by their daily assignment. Complete daily administrative documentation. Develop and maintain tactically and technically sound response capability to resolve situations with a security nexus. Interface and support other first responder organizations during emergencies involving Site resources. Develop and communicate information of interest to the Protective Force Shift Supervisor and Safeguards and Security Management as necessary.
Candidates must be willing to conduct/supervise vehicle and foot patrols, as well as stand fixed posts to observe and analyze Site-wide activities. Staff entry control facility to control ingress by vehicle and pedestrian traffic, ensuring only those with proper identification and access authorization are allowed into and prohibited articles are kept out of security areas. Operate government vehicles, communications equipment, camera systems, and other special purpose security equipment and systems. Enforce adherence to laws, orders, and regulations, which may require the Use of Force up to Deadly Force. Investigate post-incident/non-emergent, security-related incidents including interviewing witnesses, reporting persons, and victims, and writing detailed Security Incident Reports. Perform other duties as assigned. Understand and embrace nuclear safety culture principles.
Second Lieutenants are expected to be on call to support emergency and routine security operations.
Candidates must pass the Basic Readiness Standards (BRS), which consists of completing a half mile run in 4 minutes 40 seconds or less and a 40-yard dash from the prone position in 8.5 seconds or less. Must maintain the ability to pass all medical and physical fitness standards as well as other required job-specific qualification programs to continue employment. Must be able to pass a Federal background investigation and obtain a DOE “Q” Security Clearance within two (2) years from start date and maintain that clearance to continue employment.
Position requires successful completion of the TRF-100 (Tactical Response Force) within two (2) years from start date.
Minimum Requirements

- Associate’s degree with two (2) years of working experience*, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with four (4) years of working experience* is required.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Working experience must include two (2) years in any combination of Corrections, Law Enforcement, Security or Military experience.
Must be at least 21 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
Preferred Requirements
- WIPP Security Police Officer experience.
- Active Q Clearance.

Exempt grade level(s) 28-29. Minimum salary $69,444 per year of a larger salary range --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
