The Decision and Infrastructure Science (DIS) Division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most complex national security, risk, and resilience challenges. DIS experts have developed methods to understand dependencies and interdependencies, build resilient infrastructure, respond to emergencies, secure critical supply chains, and strengthen national security. DIS is seeking an highly experienced defense and national security expert to provide leadership of DIS’ existing and emerging defense research portfolio.
As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, enabling complex technical problems to be explored through the integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.
In this position, you will:
Lead multi-disciplinary research projects related to defense, national security, and critical emerging and advanced dual use technologies; oversee the development of defense and national security tools, models, and technical assessments.
Provide subject matter expertise for DIS and Nuclear Technology and National Security (NTNS) Directorate defense and national security projects.
Build and strengthen relationships with scientific and technical staff across Argonne to ensure defense related research maximizes laboratory expertise and resources.
Establish and strengthen relationships with potential sponsors within the U.S. Department of Defense, the Defense Industrial Base, and other key defense and national security organizations.
Manage project administration responsibilities including financial management, performance and financial reporting, and other key processes (e.g., procurements, quality assurance, etc.)
Collaborate with division and directorate leadership to develop and implement a defense strategy and research and development (R&D) agenda for DIS; secure internal and external resources to execute the R&D agenda research for use by sponsors.
This position can be performed remotely, onsite (Argonne IL or the DC area [Pitch], or a hybrid of the two.
Position Requirements
To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and have a “TS/SCI” clearance, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
10+ years of experience in senior level defense and national security research or practitioner roles.
Superior subject matter expertise related to defense, national security, and economic security challenges and needs.
In-depth knowledge of the defense and economic security policy landscape, including the National Defense Authorization Act, Defense Production Act, National Defense Strategy, National Defense Industrial Strategy, and other relevant legislation, statute, and policy.
Excellent leadership and people skills, including experience managing large and diverse teams.
Strong oral and written communication skills. This includes the ability to clearly articulate complex information in a way that is accessible to broad audiences, as well as the capability to interact with team members and sponsors on all aspects of sponsored research activities.
Advanced degree in foreign relations, public policy/administration, law, or another related field.
