We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Protection Engineer to join the Facilities Division Fire Protection Department (FAC-FP). This position supports and implements aspects of the Argonne Fire Protection Program. As a fire protection engineer, you will be responsible for performing fire hazard analyses and facility fire protection assessments, completing design reviews, supporting maintenance activities completed by Argonne’s Fire Systems Technicians, and other engineering tasks assigned by the Department Manager. You will be responsible for completing assigned tasks in a timely manner using independent judgment to facilitate effective and efficient workflow. You will work closely with other members of FAC-FP to achieve the department’s goals.
Specific Duties:
- Perform fire hazard analyses and facility fire protection assessments per Department of Energy (DOE) Order 420.1C and DOE Standard 1066-2023 to identify hazards, ensure applicable engineering and administrative controls are in place, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrections,
- Perform hazards analysis of experimental work and recommend the appropriate engineering and administrative controls,
- Review or develop designs for fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, fire barrier, and fire stop assemblies,
- Serve as a lead engineer for fire protection construction projects as directed by the Fire Protection Program Manager to ensure compliance with DOE, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and facility specific requirements,
- Coordinate with Argonne Project Management Office (PMO) staff to ensure successful completion of fire protection projects,
- Perform visual inspections of fire protection systems to identify degradation or performance issues,
- Evaluate fire protection systems and components against existing design requirements to verify compliance, and
- Review and revise inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with NFPA codes and standards and DOE requirements.

Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or a related engineering or science field with 10 years of experience in a fire protection engineering role.
- Demonstrated skill and knowledge of fire protection systems (including hydraulics, suppression, alarm, detection and barrier systems), engineering, principles, practices, codes including but not limited to NFPA and other applicable fire protection, life safety, and building codes commensurate with their level of experience.
- Demonstrated experience identifying fire hazards and their required preventative and mitigative engineering and/or administrative controls.
- Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, while being detail oriented and using sound independent judgment to accomplish tasks.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Lab-wide systems and applications including those related to operations, procurement, CMMS is a plus.
- Knowledge, skills, and experience, including using features in editing documents, with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook Mail and Calendar) and Adobe Acrobat
Preferred Skills:
- Registration as a professional engineer (fire protection) is highly desirable.
- National Fire Protection Association Certified Fire Protection Specialist is desirable.
- Knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations; DOE orders, standards, and guidance documents; and other applicable directives.
- Knowledge of the Highly Protected Risk (HPR) philosophy, model building codes, Factory Mutual Data Sheets, and other applicable codes and standards is required for this position.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:
- PT3 Level: Bachelor’s and 4+ years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $83,264 - $131,342.
- PT4 Level: Bachelor’s and 6+ years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $102,694 - $162,020.
