About the Role:
Fermilab seeks a highly experienced and visionary leader with a passion for innovation to serve as our Chief Information Officer (CIO). This role is a cornerstone in our mission to drive technological innovation and operational excellence, ensuring our IT strategies align with the laboratory’s long-term vision and national security priorities. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) will play a critical role in defining lab-wide strategies and delivering technology-driven solutions that support scientific research, operational efficiency, and organizational growth.
What your day-to-day as a Chief Information Officer at Fermilab will look like:
• Serve as a key member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership team to contribute to lab-wide strategic and operational planning.
• Develop, execute, and align IT and business services with the laboratory’s strategic mission.
• Establish long-term IT plans that meet the demands of scientific research and national security priorities.
• Oversee all IT platforms and systems, including application development, delivery, and support.
• Drive the design and implementation of cost-effective, secure technology solutions.
• Promote the adoption of emerging technologies and best-fit solutions for innovative scientific research.
• Lead and nurture a high-performing, diverse IT team, focusing on attracting, developing, and retaining world-class talent.
• Cultivate a culture of accountability, customer service, and inclusivity.
• Partner with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure compliance with DOE cybersecurity standards and regulations.
• Develop and enforce policies to meet DOE and federal standards for privacy, security, and data management.
• Develop and implement a PMO framework with best practices for project governance, risk management, and resource allocation.
• Oversee the IT budget, ensuring alignment with operational needs and fiscal goals.
• Act as a key advisor on IT trends, aligning the laboratory with industry advancements and national security objectives.
• Represent the Laboratory in discussions with the Department of Energy, other governmental agencies, and research organizations.
Skills and Attributes for Success:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (Master’s preferred).
Experience: 10+ years of experience in information technology leadership roles.
• Proven ability to manage large-scale IT transformations and complex infrastructures.
• Strong knowledge of federal cybersecurity standards, cloud computing, and advanced research applications.
• Proficiency in translating business needs into technical solutions and vice versa.
• Knowledge of financial regulations, data protection, and industry best practices.
• Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
