Pay Range
$159,330 - $204,636 Annually
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Job Description
The Bioscience and Biotechnology Division within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate LLNL is seeking to fill a position for a dedicated and hardworking
Research Scientist with a background in cell biology with demonstrated experience in advanced cellular and tissue models (cardiac and neuronal), toxicology, electrophysiology and other advanced molecular biology approaches. In this position, you will direct and conduct advanced cell and animal biology research, contributing to our understanding cellular effects of physiological insults for mission relevant programs. Your role will involve working on defined research projects, where you will be expected to demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and a keen attention to detail within a multidisciplinary team of scientists. This position is in the Human Health Sciences Group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.
You Will
- Lead and implement in vitro experiments that include both 2D and 3D rat and human cell models
- Collaborate with other scientists for in vivo experiments
- Utilize advanced cell and molecular biology techniques to investigate and understand mechanisms of cellular injury and repair
- Evaluate large data sets to refine, inform, and design subsequent experiments.
- Conduct literature reviews on state-of-the-art approaches relevant to the problem being addressed.
- Train and mentor early career and technician level staff
- Collaborate and interact with inter-organizational contacts and/or external customers.
- Prepare and present technical reports
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Ph.D. in Cell Biology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience with human and rat cell cultures, with an emphasis on cardiac and neuronal cells or tissue models.
- Significant experience with electrophysiology, immunostaining, flow cytometry, and multi-omics (emphasis on single-cell RNA sequencing).
- Significant experience in elucidating mechanisms of cellular or tissue disfunction
- Proficiency in R for data analyses.
- Advanced understanding of statistics for longitudinal datasets.
- Practical experience with multi-omics sample preparation and analyses.
- Experience in a fast-paced environment and able to work both independently and as a team with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
- Proficient with common software (e.g., Microsoft Office applications) and able to quickly learn new software.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Experience with animal models for toxicological assessment
- Experience with histology and immunohistochemistry

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
