Overview
The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a part time Epidemiology Data Analyst position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Research Triangle Park, NC.
The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.
What the EPA project is about
The Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) provides the science needed to understand the complex interrelationship between people and nature in support of assessments and policy to protect human health and ecological integrity. Within CPHEA, the Public Health and Environmental Systems Division (PHESD) focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment, promotes human health and well-being, and fosters healthy and safe communities. PHESD scientists develop and evaluate measurements, methods, and models to better understand and quantify exposures and their effects on public health and the environment. The Division conducts innovative research on characterizing human and ecological exposures and understanding the impacts of these exposures on both human health and ecological integrity.
Responsibilities
As a team member, you will perform data management and data analysis support for epidemiologic research examining complex interactions between air pollutants and climate factors on reproductive health outcomes. You will provide data management of large linked health and exposure datasets to set up epidemiologic data sets for various approaches, quantitative epidemiologic data analysis, quality assurance and control checks, interpretation of results, visualization of results, and generate manuscripts to disseminate findings. Analyses will be focused on birth outcomes for the state of Ohio and for the United States nationally.
Data Development and Analysis responsibilities will include:
- Conducting statistical analyses for epidemiological research, including but not limited to:
- Multivariable regression;
- Set up and analysis of case-crossover study designs;
- Set up and analysis of time-series design;
- Distributed non-linear lag models;
- Two-stage time-series analyses; and
- Interaction and effect measure modification analysis methods.
- Creation of time-varying at-risk populations for analysis;
- Creation of data dictionaries for analysis projects;
- Creation of commented code files in SAS or R for analysis projects; and
- Literature review.
Communications-related responsibilities will include:
- Interacting with EPA scientists who are experts in epidemiologic research;
- Documenting code, methods, and land cover development efforts;
- Preparing detailed documentation of their efforts; and
- Preparing scientific presentation materials and manuscripts on their work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
- Demonstrated education and experience in epidemiologic data analysis and methods;
- Demonstrated experience in air pollution health research;
- Demonstrated experience in climate related research;
- Demonstrated education and/or experience in research of chemical and non-chemical stressors or cumulative exposure or mixtures health impacts;
- Demonstrated education and/or experience in reproductive, women’s, or children’s health research;
- Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills;
- Proficiency with programming in R or SAS for epidemiologic analysis, including: DLNM models, effect measure modification or interaction analysis of environmental exposures, and time-stratified case-crossover analysis; and
- Experience with extracting, cleaning, and analyzing data from large (>100,000 observations) datasets.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
- Experience with spatial/geographical analysis and
- Experience with analyses in vulnerable/susceptible populations.
Location:This job will be located EPA’s facility in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $38.53 for hours worked.
Hours: Part time (15 hours/week)
Travel: Occasional local travel may be required.
Expected start date: The position is part time and expected to begin December 2024. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA.

Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age and
- Have earned at least a Master’s degree in the field of epidemiology and currently enrolled in a PhD level epidemiology program from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
- Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
