We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are over 2,000 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
Under general supervision, the Senior Design Drafter within the Particle Physics Directorate (PPD) prepares and electronically stores complex designs, details, assemblies, and schematics to satisfy design requirements for mechanical and electrical systems, utilizing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and other job-related software applications, ensuring compliance and consistency to professional standards. Oversees assigned projects from inception through completion.

- Prepare and create schematics, layouts, and other related documents.
- Create, modify and organize moderately complex 3D model assemblies and makes some design calculations. Recommend approach to be followed in developing drawings, as circumstances require.
- Provide information to assist with procurement, fabrication, assembly, installation, and other aspects of the completed design.
- Design and draw equipment and systems such as, "as built" new floor plans, and electrical/process diagrams, including field investigations.
- Maintain and update related files and databases; electronically store archives of drawings.
- Understands Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) application principles and applies to drawings.
- Select, recommend, and specify materials and equipment to be used in the preparation of complex design layouts and detail layouts.
- Research design solutions, assist in design development, and select components for design.
- Delegate work and mentor drafters and students, as circumstances require.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
