We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are over 2,000 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
You will:
- Analyze data and perform engineering calculations. Develop designs of specific parts, components, or phases of a project.
- Develop specifications, designs, and documents for major and technically complex engineering projects and design solutions. Work involves a variety of moderately complex engineering techniques.
- Plan projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status. Estimate manpower, schedules work, coordinates and directs technicians.
- Provides technical direction to draftsmen, designers, engineering associates, technicians, or less senior engineers. Coordinates and/or supervises technicians and other engineers, as assigned. May supervise an engineering/technical team or department, as assigned.
- Research and propose solutions to engineering problems and provides analyses of alternatives to manager(s).
- Participate in procurement, as well as manufacture, installation, testing, and operation.
- Assist or lead in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring and/or management of budgetary obligations.
- Review and approve work before hardware and financial resources are committed, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
- Provide and implement changes in methods, design, or equipment in assigned area and contributes to the overall safety and completion of assignments.
- Contribute to setting lab-wide engineering policies, safety standards or technical standards.
- Serve on safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
- May participate in technical conferences and publication.
We are looking for a candidate with:
- A bachelor’s in an applicable Engineering discipline with 8+ years of engineering experience, or a master’s or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline with 6+ years of engineering experience.
- Familiarity with the operation of particle accelerators and the specification of beam instrumentation.
- Knowledge of the design and simulation of beam instrumentation detectors and signal processing circuitry.
- Desire to work on designs and documentation behind a desk and testing and troubleshooting in the field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Proficient in application of theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for the engineering discipline.
- Possess project planning skills in developing specifications and documents for major and technically complex engineering projects and engineering design solutions.
