A Postdoctoral Appointee opening on the experimental development of optically-active spins for Quantum Information Science at surfaces is available in the Quantum and Energy Materials group at the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory.
The focus of this program is to develop and understand optically-active spins in defects and dopants at or near surfaces. We will utilize low temperature ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) surface science and scanning probe microscopy (STM/AFM) techniques in close concert with in situ optical/RF quantum measurements at the single spin level. We will take advantage of recently developed (and developing) instrumentation which brings together these complementary methodologies as part of the Atomic Quantum Information Surface Science (AQuISS) Lab. Larger goals include improvement of nanoscale quantum sensors, precision characterization and control of defects/dopants at surfaces, and control of interactions between optically-active spins with an eye toward entanglement engineering.
The successful candidate will become part of a strong team and actively interact with staff scientists across groups, as well as external collaborators (e.g. the University of Chicago). Please note that only applications through Argonne website will be considered. Questions about the position should be directed to Jeffrey Guest (jrguest@anl.gov).
Position Requirements
The candidate should have strong experimental experience in at least one of the fields of UHV scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy OR single defect/dopant quantum spectroscopy and manipulations.
Position Requirements:
- A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field (received within the last 3 years or upcoming year)
- Strong experimental experience in at least one of the fields of UHV scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy OR single defect/dopant quantum optical/RF spectroscopy and manipulations
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
- Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
Applicants are preferred to have expertise or knowledge of some combination of the following:
- UHV STM/AFM and surface science
- Single ‘particle’ laser spectroscopy, especially optically-detected magnetic resonance (ODMR)
- Experimental skills including optics, RF electronics, experimental control (e.g., labview/Python)
- Good collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other divisions, labs, and universities
Interested candidates should apply via with their CV and an answer to the questions below on their Cover Letter:
- What experience do you have with UHV STM/AFM and/or single particle laser spectroscopy and quantum measurement?
- What experience do you have with experimental development?
Interviews will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.
