The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidates for The Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) Program. This role resides in the Data Acquisition and Detectors (DAD) group, within DSSI, working to develop high-level data acquisition tools. This ranges from integrating scientific detectors with the control system to integration with the NSLS-II data management systems. This role will support both operations of current NSLS-II beamlines and the development of the next generation of beamlines from the earliest stages of development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively on data-oriented software projects to develop new capabilities at NSLS- II.
- Develop and deploy software and share responsibility for its performance in operations.
- Provide support to other scientific staff and facility users, through both teaching and troubleshooting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s +8 years, Master’s +6 years, or Doctorate +2 years post-PhD, in Physical Sciences, Applied Mathematics or related field.
- Ability to employ sound software engineering methodologies.
- Demonstrated record in collaborative software development.
- Demonstrated experience in programming with Python.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.
- Self-motivated and able to work in a team environment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s and 12+ years, or Master’s and 9+ years, or Doctorate and 6+ years post-PhD
- Current knowledge in high-volume scientific data collection, data management, and data analysis concepts, and/or experience as an experimental scientist.
- Experience managing distributed software systems.
- Experience with detector development and control.
- Data acquisition and management experience at a synchrotron light source, neutron source, particle accelerator, or other major scientific user facility.
- Experience contributing to community-led open-source software projects.
- Experience with event-driven systems.

- The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level contingent upon their depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills.
- This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework) at the discretion of the manager/dept chair.
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $101,200.00 - $184,000.00 yearly. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
