Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the oversight of all Energy and Utilities operations personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all plants and utilities during the off-hours.
- Under minimum supervision the SSS is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all utility services, regular inspections (rounds) of utility plants, certain buildings, air handlers, and specialized equipment for the entire site.
- Responds to all emergencies, alarms and unusual conditions related issues to Energy and Utilities plant equipment, site air handlers, building automation systems, and services related to onsite non-emergency conditions.
- In the event of emergency situations such as equipment malfunction, water main breaks, sanitary blockages, or power outages, takes appropriate action to prevent damage and notifies responsible utility supervisor or Utilities Manager.
- Performs all telephone emergency work call-ins (ECI) for all bargaining unit personnel during the off hours and coordinates required associated paperwork with the Facility Operations Center.
- Oversees, directs, assigns, and coordinates work of CCWF operations personnel including work assignments and training of staff during the non-day shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Acts as primary contact with Laboratory Protection personnel during emergencies, outages, etc.
- Directs response to emergency situations to include emergency shutdown procedures.
- Acts as primary contact with Staff Services personnel for all BNL employees, guests, and on-site residents.
- Oversees the repair or maintenance of equipment in a safe and conscientious manner following safety rules, procedures, such as confined space, lock-out/tag-out, etc.
- Maintain records, electronic logs, and paper logbooks, of rounds and inspections performed.
- Generates work orders in the Maximo work order system.
- Assist the Central Chilled Water Facility Supervisor in routine maintenance and repairs as necessary to keep the plant operating at optimal efficiency.
- Assist in the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual planned maintenance on equipment located in utility plants.
- Assist in maintaining a high level of housekeeping, inventory, and maintenance of tools and equipment in all utility plants.
- Assists the Energy & Utilities Manager in special projects or tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires five (5) years related experience in the applicable construction and maintenance trades and some broad utilities or large facility experience.
- Requires experience coordinating and directing the work of staff, including assignments, scheduling, and work planning.
- Requires some experience in any of the following: operation and maintenance of chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, boilers, pumps, air compressors, electrical systems, water distribution & treatment systems, and control systems.
- Must have a working knowledge of computers and software applications i.e., Microsoft suite, Maximo.
- Strong communication skills interacting at multiple levels including trades, customers, and team members.
- Ability to read and understand underground utility maps.
- Required to come in during the day on occasion to attend training classes, special meetings/events, and perform medical physicals.
- Must be willing to work on a flexible shift schedule and be capable of covering an incidental, or prolonged shift with minimal notice, i.e., Lab closures due to snow events.
- Must have a valid NYS Driver’s license.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience and familiarity with the following:
- Knowledge of NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code
- EPA 608 Universal HVAC technician Certification
- Experience working in a collective bargaining union environment
Environmental, Safety, and Health, Considerations:
- ,Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 30 feet.
- Work outdoors/cold environments.
- Work in warm environments.
- Ability to act as a primary authorized employee for Lock-out/Tag-out.
- Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
- Domestic travel may be required on occasion for training purposes.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $ 97,300- $115,900 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
