Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Central Characterization Program (CCP) Deputy Project Manager (DPM) to join our team located in Los Alamos, New Mexico working at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, controlling, and tracking operations level work in support of the Central Characterization Program (CCP) at LANL. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, and deliberate implementation of procedures to ensure work activities are performed safely and compliantly. The following are key responsibilities for this position:
- Complete the necessary training to obtain the CCP Vendor Project Manager qualification
- Maintain effective working relationships with cross‑functional teams, internal stakeholders, and external partners/vendors
- Track characterization production metrics, and maintain forecasted production rates
- Provide oversight of CCP operations personnel
- Provide Conduct of Operations leadership and expertise
- Provide direction to assigned personnel regarding execution of work scope
- Perform management observations and management assessments as needed
- Mentor team members and provide opportunities for professional development
- Ensure adherence to safety, regulatory, and quality requirements related to TRU waste characterization and certification
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree with five (5) years of professional experience, or
- Associate’s degree with nine (9) years of professional experience, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with thirteen (13) years of professional experience is required
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a “Q” Clearance
- Demonstrated knowledge of operational safety, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs
- Physical demands associated with this position include prolonged standing, extensive walking, lifting and carrying heavy weighted items, up to 50 pounds
- The ability to negotiate stairs, ladders and platforms, as well as the ability to work in various weather conditions
- Professional experience must include leadership responsibilities
- Current or prior experience in CCP or a similar waste characterization and certification program
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate across all organizational levels
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks concurrently
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
- Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access
Preferred Requirements - Proven experience researching and recommending alternative solutions to problems associated with the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control of TRU Mixed Waste.
- Two years’ experience at a DOE Category 2 Nuclear Facility.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to interact with a variety of constituents

Exempt grade level(s) 34-36. Salary range: $114,912 to $201,044 per year -- the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
