Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a
Central Characterization Program (CCP) Visual Examination Expert (VEE) and join our team located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will obtain qualifications as a CCP Visual Examination Expert. Perform visual examination of nuclear waste. Verifing the physical form of the waste is approved and prohibited items are excluded. Interact with and lead visual examination operators and other SIMCO teams in problem solving of off normal conditions, new packaging configurations, and unfamiliar waste. Create, review, and approve Visual Examination (VE) Batch Data Reports with an emphasis on attention to detail. Responsible for the overall direction and implementation of VE of Transuramic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste at their site. Ensure VE data quality objectives (DQO) are met. Assist in the development of new Visual Examination Operator (VEO). Will be required to be familiar with onsite work locations and site point of contacts (POC). Along with having expert knowledge of the waste expected to be encountered at the facility. The selected candidate will also be required to obtain qualifications in other aspects than just VEE/VEO, to support the CCP/SIMCO mission. Will also be asked to perform other duties as assigned to support TRU waste characterization.
The work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday: 6:30am to 5:00pm.
Minimum Requirements

Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, or
- Associate’s degree with four (4) years of working experience, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalency with eight (8) years of working experience is required.
- Must hold or have previously held qualifications as a CCP VEE or as a CCP VEO. If the selected candidate does not currently hold a qualification as a VEE they must obtain that qualification within four (4) months from their start date.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
- Travel requirements up to 25%.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite is mandatory.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
- Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
Preferred Requirements
- Demonstrated working knowledge of CCP TRU Waste Characterization activities and Visual Examination Process is a plus.
Salary Range
$70,972 to $133,850 per year. Exempt grade level(s) 28-31. The specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
