What You'll Do
Supervises Waste Characterization and Disposition Group resources within the Waste Management organization. Leads waste characterization staff in performing waste characterization and disposal activities. Assigns staff work duties and sets priorities for the team. Specific duties may include subcontract development, subcontract technical representative work, developing waste profiles and sampling plans, data management, performing calculations, resolving technical problems and assisting waste generators. Also serve as an interface with YFO, subcontract and waste generator customers.
Leads functional area section with support from the senior manager in problem solving, addresses safety concerns, performs management reviews, ensures employee training qualifications are maintained, and applies lessons learned. Implements company, division, department, section, and customer requirements; provides instructions and guidelines; and resolves barriers to performance, inconsistencies in requirements, and work priority conflicts.
Responsible for encouraging cross-training and shared knowledge across the work group. Participates in resource planning for assigned scope and escalates/resolves issues, as needed, with the senior manager of Waste Characterization and Dispositioning Group.
Evaluates performance; coaches, counsels, rewards and disciplines employees as appropriate. Trains and develops staff. Manages employee complaints and resolves personnel problems as necessary. Provides leadership and personal interaction to promote positive work environment and encourages individual involvement. Sets expectation of cohesiveness, collaboration, and teamwork within the section and across organizations.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
- Fifteen or more years of education and/or relevant experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting.
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., High School diploma and 3 years nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Preferred Job Requirements
- The position will support waste characterization and subcontract management activities and requires an expert knowledge of waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities.
- Engineering/science degree/experience preferred.
- Previous experience with interpretation of analytical data for the purpose of determining regulatory status as well as mixed low level waste disposition planning and treatment/disposal profile development.
- Candidate should have familiarity with waste management requirements of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), DOE 435.1 - Radioactive Waste Management, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and related Tennessee requirements.
- Formal training related to radioactive waste management, DOT, RCRA, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Radiological Worker II is desired.
- Candidate will spend 50% of time in support of field activities that will include climbing ladders and stairs, with the balance performing administrative duties.
- Occasional respirator use may be required.
