Job Description
We are seeking a
Preliminary Background Coordinator to join the Central Clearance Processor Group within the Information & Personnel Security Division of the Security Organization.
In this role, you will perform advanced, complex administrative duties in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities. You will apply Department of Energy (DOE) order requirements to resolve complex issues, interpret policy, develop recommendations, and establish procedures related to visitor control, clearance processing, and security awareness. This position also requires a high level of customer service and frequent interaction with personnel at all levels within the Laboratory, the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration/Albuquerque (DOE/NNSA) complex, the Livermore Site Office (DOE/NNSA), and external organizations.
You Will
- Review and process requests for pre-clearance and pre-employment background investigations, determining appropriate processing requirements.
- Receive, screen, and validate clearance- and access-related forms for accuracy and completeness; follow up to obtain missing or corrected information.
- Enter, track, and monitor data in systems (e.g., LEAP) to ensure compliance with established timelines and requirements.
- Compile, analyze, and reconcile data, including preparing and validating reports, spreadsheets, correspondence, and monthly invoices related to background investigations.
- Interpret and apply DOE orders, policies, and procedures to resolve complex issues, develop recommendations, and improve administrative processes.
- Represent management by gathering, clarifying, and disseminating information, and coordinating activities with internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as a liaison between LLNL, DOE/NNSA, and external organizations to resolve clearance-related issues and support mission requirements.
- Provide high-level customer service while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
- Advanced administrative experience with exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through, including strong typing, editing, grammar, and proofreading skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, mature judgment, diplomacy, and tact when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to interpret policy, anticipate issues, and recommend and implement solutions.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple competing priorities, and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience compiling, tracking, analyzing, and reporting data, with proficiency in preparing reports and monitoring results.
- Advanced proficiency with computers and office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database applications; experience with web-based systems preferred.
- Strong customer service orientation with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships; leadership or project coordination experience preferred.
Desired Qualifications
- Working knowledge of LEAP.
- Experience with or familiarity with Central Clearance policies and procedures.
- Experience using web-based applications.
Pay Range
$38.03 - $45.63
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
Pre-Employment Drug Test

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
